Ayla, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made?

The best investment I’ve made so far was attending a private workshop with one of my professional inspirations. Prior to this workshop, I never had a mentor or worked alongside anyone within my field. This experience was a pivotal point for my career. I had gotten insight into how someone with over 10+ more years of experience within the photography business ran her business and it was the best thing I could have ever done for myself and my clients.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I am Ayla McCants; a portrait photographer based in Nashville, Tennessee. I specialize in maternity, newborn, and family. The experience I provide for my clients is meant to ensure that they enjoy their time creating with me from beginning to end. I offer a professional makeup artist, wardrobe, and prints with every collection I offer. My goal is to make my clients feel pampered and like this was easier to pull off than they ever expected. All of my clients are people who do not get in front of a camera often or have never had professional photos; I help the non-model feel totally comfortable and pose as though this is an everyday activity. In addition to the experience being enjoyable, each session produces a tangible piece of art. I believe this to be the most important aspect of my service.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

Word of mouth is the definitely the best source of new clients for me. I have had many clients from my social media presence but nothing has paid off more than my clients actually loving and enjoying their experience with me.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

The pivot that changed my life within photography came once I became pregnant. I was no longer able to capture weddings due to my high risk pregnancy and physical limitations; this lead me to focus more heavily on maternity and newborn photography. This shift in focus made me realize how much I actually love working within this niche. I connected to my clients on a totally different level, my genuine love and excitement has affected the entire flow and experience of my services.
