lright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ayana Turner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ayana, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
One day I was having a conversation with my four children about ownership in our African-American communities, generational wealth, and the concept of it. I began to tell them how they won’t be able to pass a job down to their children, but they can pass down a business to them. Entrepreneurship isn’t easy, but when you have built it from the ground up, it holds a profound significance to you. The name Pretty Klean came about because I would always say, “Okay it’s pretty clean in here so I have no complaints,” when I would check their rooms growing up and it sort of stuck. My children and I named our business Pretty Klean which is a family cleaning service offering residential and commercial needs.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
I am a published author, lead journalist for iPUSH Magazine, an educator, and I am the CEO/Owner of Pretty Klean. I multi-task a lot and I wanted to step outside of that and start a business with my children. They are all co-owners of the business, and I felt it would be a good foundation on which they could continue to build. We offer residential cleaning and maintenance and the same for commercial. We give our clients a service sheet where they can customize their very own package to fit their specific needs. We’ve had some very challenging jobs that required us stretching beyond our comfort zone to give them a fresh start. In business you will definitely make mistakes, but they turn into lessons because you will grow from them. What sets us apart is that we believe in bringing spotless cleaning right to your doorstep, and we treat each client with the utmost respect. I’m most proud of the way my staff and I pay attention to details. My two sisters also help with the business and I’m proud of them for establishing their own clients as a result of their hard work.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I wanted my children to know I was serious about starting our cleaning service Pretty Klean, so I began prepping for it. As an educator we are paid once a month, and I would sit aside $200 that I used to stock up on cleaning products and tools we would need. I did this for about five months and by the time we had our first commercial client, we had enough in our inventory to last us well over a year. I did this because I believed in what we could do as a unit, and although it meant I had to sacrifice in other areas, I was committed to being prepared to service new and potential clients. I know it may not seem like a lot of money, but when you know how to shop it goes a long way.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I will tell anybody it doesn’t matter how strong your advertisement is on social media, television, radio, or billboards, word of mouth has the potential to make or break your business. What helped build our reputation was word of mouth from clients on how well we took care of their property and their needs. We don’t consider ourselves just a cleaning business because we actually build rapport and relationships with our clients. We have a business website, and social media pages on Facebook as well as Instagram that we advertise before and after pictures on. We listen to the needs of existing and new clients and give them the services they need to make things better for them. Not everyone has the time to balance everyday life and we step in to give them the relief of stressing over keeping their home or business clean.
