We were lucky to catch up with Axel Rivera recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Axel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My desire to create stories started at a young age. I remember when I was 12, I would borrow my parents phone that barely had a functional camera and I would choreograph my friends as well as give them lines to say. I was always behind the camera. During high school I focused on taking artistic classes and workshops such as portrait photography and editing software courses. Later on I would invest on my professional equipment and started working as a freelancer for a few years. I would create campaigns for brands, headshots and do creative direction for commercials.
Just recently I decided to focus on filmmaking and creating narrative work.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Axel Rivera and I consider myself an audiovisuals creator. I take inspiration from various art forms such as: music, photography, cinema and graphic design. I started working professionally on the creative field as a photographer when I was 18. Being a photographer set me up to many challenges that required also creative solutions. It is a very fast passed job and in order to keep a good workflow of clients you have to deliver quality and also do it in the shortest time possible.
Working as a photographer allowed me to experiment and develop my personal style. I would focus on doing portraits and product photography but it also opened new doors like real estate photography and live events.
Now that I am focusing on filmmaking I always like to bring skills learned on my photography field. I want to offer new ideas that are fresh and keep up with the trends that are going on around the world.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I even have to remind myself this once in a while but constancy is key when it comes to build and connect with a community on social media. People want to interact with authentic personalities and feel closeness. The creative work cannot be forced or rushed but it is important as a creator to show the process and slices of their lives with their audience. This will create a solid relationship between the creator and their followers. Post everywhere, be intentional and don’t overthink if it’s a “perfect piece of content”.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Interacting with art and creators is a very rewarding experience. I enjoy meeting young people with the desire of making the world a better place. The new generations are not scared to show who they are and share their art in the most fascinating ways. I consume films and music everyday and I am very much looking forward for whatever is coming in the future.
