We were lucky to catch up with Awesome Up recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Awesome thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
There is a lot that has gone into my learning the craft. My “Awesome Up” project is a genre blending music experience – I try to weave together a new story for listeners by drawing upon diverse experiences in styles such as EDM, Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, Delta Blues and Rock as well as lifetime playing in bands. I make a lot of heavy bass music to stomp to at night but I also try to mix it with the cinematic and melodic as well. Sometimes I like to make tracks to listen to while driving on a sunny day. I’ve learned that whatever mood I’m feeling or topic I’m interested in I should write music about it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been involved in music since I first got piano lessons at 5 and was singing in the church choir shortly thereafter. In high school my passion was guitar and it was then I also started experimenting with audio editing and production software. Now that is my full time focus and I’m in the studio all the time creating!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society needs to realize that everyone is an individual and that while there are a lot of tutorials out there to teach you how to sound exactly like another artist, the real beauty is finding what moves you as an individual and expressing that musically. It can be hard to find an individual sound and that’s why I believe it’s important for new artists to learn the fundamentals of music and use those to generate infinite amounts of inspiration.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had a straightforward guide to starting out in production software because there was so much to learn! Ableton is a huge program with so much depth that when I started to apply my musical knowledge to it I hit a software learning curve very quickly. So many people have asked me how to get started and after teaching loads of students I finally made a website called ProducerTheory.Com so that people could get started quickly and easily!
