We were lucky to catch up with AWARE The Designer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi AWARE, thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
I believe in the custom experience. I believe that things take time and that there is only one you so why shouldn’t your custom piece reflect that. I never create the same exact piece twice because I strongly believe that no one should be able to walk into a gown shop and recreate your moment and become a “who wore it best”.
From your Inspo pictures, to the 2-D & 3-D sketch, all the way to the first fitting and final product I feel like this is your moment to be authentically you and every part of your design that you pick out another client cannot go in and get. I am not a typical bridal and gown designer because ,if you wanted to buy a premade veil or a size 8 evening gown, no option would be like the other. You will become the only star in your show. Guaranteed !
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am AWARE The Designer and I focus on continuing the custom experience when it comes to Wedding attire and Gowns. I create custom Wedding & wedding party gowns (I.e bridesmaids, flower girls, wedding guests etc. ), wedding accessories, and boudoir. We also do Dress reconstructions and alterations. I have always loved fashion but never knew the power of custom attire made specifically for me until my first maternity dress made by my sons’ grandmother. When something is made specifically for you, for your body and no one else can go grab it , there is a different confidence there.
I believe in this day and age everyone is focused on the “perfect “ body shape and that does not exist. We should be able to put on any gown and have the “perfect” shape on our own, not comparing it to the model we have seen on the magazine cover or tv and then belittle ourselves when we come up short. Each design is made with. complete structure, so that your body shape becomes your ideal body shape. We are using what was already given to us and amplifying it, falling more in love with ourselves on our special days.
Not only am I wanting to create a sense of love for our customs pieces, but a better love for ourselves
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
“Practice makes perfect”. Practice never makes perfect but it makes improvement. I was always so hard on myself because I would look around and see other business people getting where I thought I should be , so I was always rebranding and restructuring the image of my brand to become “better”, but never actually pushed my self to try more and to actually do more. It was not until I started actually failing in my business financially, time wise, structure wise, even with a huge wedding client that I had to stop and sit down and say “you have not been perfect, but it’s time to improve. My restructuring was intentional because now I had mistakes I needed to learn from and actually take the time to correct.Practice makes improvements, but only when you’re trying you can see what needs to be improved.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
It is SOOOO true when they say your network is your net worth. Go out and meet people. Constantly meeting people will not only build the word of mouth, but will encourage you seeing others like you around, and not to mention help you with your communication skills when you actually get these clients. Use every situation in your life as a stepping stone or tool in your business. Got bad service at a restaurant how can you turn that around so that way you know how to react when your client feels like they are getting bad service. Hate small talk? How can you change that maybe talking to your grandmother everyday so that the conversations with your client aren’t so tedious and it actually helps you up sale a product.
Network is your net worth and always use your environment
