We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Avital Shimon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Avital, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear a story from back when you were an intern or apprentice. What’s a memorable story you can share with us?
My first day as an intern was also my first day in New York City. I had no idea how to navigate the subways or the Manhattan grid, but I had to f*ke it.One of my first tasks was to visit a custom flower shop to pick out handmade flowers for a client’s dress. I spent a long time looking through every option until I landed on three pretty red delicate flowers. The shop employees wrapped them carefully, and I was determined to get them back safely.I go outside and it’s pouring. My umbrella broke instantly, my phone battery was nearly dead, and the thought of getting stranded in a city I didn’t understand yet was terrifying. I power-walked through the rain and finally got to my bus before it died. Luckily, the bus had a charging port where I could charge my phone and get me to where I needed to be. But unfortunately with all the rain, water seeped into my phone and it wouldn’t charge. I had to rely on the street signs and my memory of the map I studied the night before to get me back. Eventually, I found my way home, completely soaked, but proud that I’d kept the flowers safe.
The next day, I delivered the box to my boss, ready to explain the whole story. But as soon as I was about to, I stopped myself. Instead, I told her the task was done and everything went smoothly. I wanted to show her she could rely on me no matter the circumstances.
From that day, I learned how to stay calm under pressure, trust my instincts, and to be resourceful when things don’t go as planned.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Avital Shimon, and I’m a wardrobe stylist based in New York City. I specialize in closet edits, personal shopping, and creating lookbooks that help clients pair pieces together when packing or getting dressed for the day.
I got my start in the fashion industry working in retail and different apparel marts. I made my way to New York thanks to an incredible stylist who took a chance on me. She saw something in me, and that opportunity allowed me to gain hands-on experience, grow my network, and connect me with amazing mentors and lifelong friends.
Fashion has always been my passion, but more than that, I’ve always wanted to help people. Styling allows me to do that by helping others feel confident in their own skin. I believe that when you look good, you feel good—and that confidence carries into every area of your life.
What sets me apart is my commitment to going the extra mile. Whether it’s staying up late to organize looks, researching specific products a client might love, or taking those extra precautions to make sure every detail is perfect, I’m all in. I want every client to walk into a room feeling empowered, confident, comfortable, and completely themselves.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
One of the most effective ways I’ve grown my client base has been through word of mouth—starting with my friends. I began styling them in exchange for spreading the word to their family and friends. Their excitement and support not only boosted my confidence, but has also helped me connect with new clients and expand my network.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Before getting the opportunity to move to New York, I was at a low point, questioning whether I had what it took to break into the fashion industry. I was applying for jobs every day, facing tons of rejections that left me feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. From all of the rejections, I received an acceptance that opened a door of opportunities. I was eager to learn and constantly asked questions-whether it was how to pin garments on set or how to properly prepare a fitting room for a client. I was determined to absorb as much knowledge as possible. There were days that challenged me but I never let that define me. I showed up to work everyday ready to give my best, and that consistency helped me grow professionally and personally.
