We recently connected with Avis Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Avis, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
The summer of 2016 my 21 yr old so was killed in a car accident. It was a turning point in my life as I had to learning how to handle my own grief as I work as a therapist helping other recover from a variety of trauma events. I had deal with a couple of other traumatic events that summer and eventually was lead to get professional help of my own. As I learn to navigate my new normal I develop a framework to teach people who work in high pressure positions how to prioritize self-care the right way. This framework has alone me to travel and teach other professionals how to use this framework.

Avis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn is that narrative that social workers do not make a lot of money. I had to learn to get out of the box that the professions tries to place us in to us my transferable skills to create a lane for myself. I had to learn how to monetize my mind and price my knowledge accordingly to value I offer. This takes knowing my worth.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What has helped me build my reputation is being visible in my community. I love to volunteer and I offer my time in places and spaces that I know can benefit from proper education about behavior health. I love grassroots efforts and enjoy being part of set up crew greeting, talking, and helping in any way that I can. I have been a panelist guest at various events and these opportunities allow me to meet people and many later seek out my services.
