We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Avery Woods a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Avery thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Our company Texas Toting came from my Instagram name @Texas_Tote_em. We felt that name sticks with me (since I was already on the scene and known) and kind of describes my personality. I wanted it to feel personal, but also give people someone they could relate to in a company. When they hear “Texas Toting” it’s grabbing. It’s different, pretty original in my opinion (lol), and puts my stamp on it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After being a shooter in the industry for a few years. Training with different instructors, I felt there was a gap in trainers in the industry. I felt there weren’t many that were teaching students how to use firearms from the very beginning. We make sure to continue taking trainings from instructors all over the country. So that the instruction we give is quality and always up to date. We started this at the time that it was a big boom in new firearms owners in America, so we wanted to fill that void. We wanted to make sure those firearms owners had somewhere to train that wasn’t intimidating to them. This led to us reviewing different firearms and gear in the industry for those that were new to the industry. That’s how l became a content creator. I get so many people ask for recommendations on gear, guns, optics, and the list goes on. We try to get our hands on a variety of items. High in price, mid level, and also beginner, so that we can give quality recommendations to those new owners in the industry. One thing that I didn’t want to do was just be an “influencer.” We have enough of those in the industry. I wanted to be an influencer that actually shoots often, trains often, but still make room to have fun.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media has been the best source for getting new clients. They see others talking about you, they run across your page on one of the social sites. Or, they have been referred to you. We turn to social media for everything, including educational purposes. I’ve always been careful of what I post on my page. I want everyone who is interested in Texas Toting to feel welcomed with open arms. We take pride in our company and beliefs, and we always want clients to know that when they engage, or just visit our sites.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My wife, Gabrielle Woods, is my business partner. We actually met through our siblings about 9 years ago. She was just learning to shoot, and I was already shooting a little bit. Once we found that as something we had in common, it brought us closer. Made her want to train, but also helped us find our way into the industry. As a female shooter wanting to take classes, but seeing how intimidating some instructors are was part of our creation of Texas Toting. Being a married couple attracts couples, but more importantly women. Having my wife as my business partner gives more women the courage to want to shoot and take classes. It’s a perfect balance that we noticed people love and want to be a part of.
