Avery, appreciate you joining us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?

My Mom is my hero. She is the one who inspired me to make candles. She taught me how to make candles, she has helped me come up with ideas, candle names, and just has helped me strategize my business. I am so thankful for her because NineThirteen Candle Co. would not be where it’s at today without her.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Hi, my name is Avery Techeira, and I am from Houston Texas. I have been in the candle industry for almost two years now. My candles are made from soy wax. The wax is derived from vegetable soybean. It is a natural and renewable resource which is better not only for the environment but for your home. Before I got into candle making, I ran across the issue of burning through candles within two to three days. I wanted to create a formula that not only gives you a strong candle but a long-lasting candle. After a lot of testing, I found the perfect formula that will allow my candles to burn for 60 plus hours, and still provide a strong smell when lit. I also wanted to create a candle that matches my customer’s home/decor. I decided to go with the natural color of the wax, which was an off-white and copper lid for my 10 oz candles, and an all-black jar with a grey and white label. I didn’t want my labels to be anything to crazy or cluttered, but I wanted it to be eye-catching. Simple, yet elegant. For people who love color, I offer color candles, custom candles for baby showers, bachelorette parties, custom labels, and much more. I can make any candle desire my customers are wanting, but for my core candles, I just feel simplicity is the way to go. I also make room, linen, and car spray. My desire for the spray is for it to last a long time and leave your home smelling great. its strong enough to cover smoke, and the smell of precious fur babies. After a long day at work, or when it’s time to wind it down and relax, or even after doing a deep cleaning, and it’s time to light a candle, I want my customers to get a sense of peace and happiness. I want my customers to be taken away when they walk in a room and smell my candle burning or room spray. i introduced body oil to my line as well, and I am genuinely shocked with how much my customers love the oil. The body oil is made up of a luxurious blend of plant-based oils that hydrate, moisturize, and brighten the skin. This non-greasy, all-natural blend of vitamin E oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, glycerin, and rosehip is great at balancing any skin type! It is lightweight, quickly absorbed into the skin, leaves a natural glow without looking or feeling oily. The scent is long lasting, and INTENSE. It makes my heart so happy to be able to provide multiple products for my customers.

How did you build your audience on social media?

I gained my social media audience from my personal page and promoting from there. I was lucky enough to have many followers which allowed me to get my candle name out there. Personally, I feel marketing plays a big part in your business. My advice would be to go to as many pop-up shop events that you can go to. You will meet so many people. My most recent pop-up event that i attended, I had a sign that said if you follow my Instagram, you can get x% off your next online order. I was very shocked as to how many followers I gained, and followers I had gained by word of mouth.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

I feel the quality of my candles and the appearance is what helped build my reputation within the candle market. I listen to what my customers want and deliver just that, the formula I have created allows you to enjoy your candle, body oil, and spray for a long period of time.
