We were lucky to catch up with Avery Campbell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Avery, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve been writing stories and poetry for as long as I can remember, but the defining moment was when I had a daycare teacher that was also a DJ bring in his equipment one day. I was around the age of 7 or 8. He had turn tables, drum pads, microphones, like everything and I was instantly in love. He explained how everything worked from creating beats to adding loops to songs, and how to record. He even let us create and record a jingle for a local restaurant. Each kid got two bars and I was nervous so I just said “okay, what’s up.” Haha, but this is when my passion for music started.
I came up with a stage name and started writing songs. I would pay more attention to the production of songs on the radio and would even point out the instruments that I could hear in the background. That moment really changed everything for me.
This moment is also why I decided to go into business to help creatives with marketing themselves online with my digital marketing agency Blue27 Agency.
Avery, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I work full-time for myself as a digital marketing strategist for creatives with my agency Blue 27 Agency. I’ve been working as a marketing strategist for almost three years now. We help with social media management, social media strategy, launch strategy, and influencer marketing. We know that as a creative, you’re spending more time focusing on your craft and social media can sometimes be the last thing on your mind, especially when you’re in your zone. That’s why we offer done-for-you services so that social media is no longer on your to-do list.
Working with other creatives full-time is what gave me the final push to step into my artistry and put out my first single. Over the last year, I found myself writing more and more songs and I knew that was a sign for me to stop being afraid and just put myself out there. So my first single, Winning Season dropped on my birthday (January 28th) to let people know that my time is now and I am coming for everything that is mine.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is there are no rules you necessarily have to follow. Every artist and creative is so unique even if they are in the same industry. Because of this, you can be yourself fully and someone will connect with it. Because we live in a world that is so bent on us conforming to and upholding traditional ideals, being able to express myself through art has been a safe haven.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want people to be able to feel seen and healed through my music. One of my biggest musical inspirations is Angel Haze who is always speaking about their past in their music which has always been so therapeutic to me. To know that I’m not alone in this. With my full-length project, I will be going more into detail about my healing journey and I hope it helps and touches whoever needs to hear it.
