Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Averien Turner . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Averien , appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
How I first got the idea for my non profit Little Humble Entrepreneurs Foundation, first came from an event that we did at my clothing store. A young man by the name of Nasir that was 6 years old came up to me and ask me if I can help him start his lemonade stand. Of course I loved the ambition from the young man so we put it in full motion. Through my clothing brand Humble Clothing Co, and my clothing store Humble Headquarters, we start getting the funding we needed to get started. I made Nasir a go fund me, where we raised over $1200 dollars for him to get started. Once we got everything we needed, the next step was the product, so once we perfected the perfect lemonade, it was time to sell. I got us some Nasir lemonade shirts made, also we got donated a Nasir lemonade logo, then it was time to let the people taste his creation. Nasir had 3 flavors, strawberry (My Favorite), watermelon, and regular lemonade. We set Nasir up with a pop up shop in front of my clothing store, and we just took all donations from those that wanted to try it, and I can say it was a hit! Everyone loved his lemonade. So that is what gave me the idea to start my foundation, to jump start kids business from A to Z. Figuring out the name of their business, then getting their LLC done, getting their logo done, finding resources for their product they want to sell. I just want to be the mentor I never had in business, so that’s how Little Humble Entrepreneurs Foundation was created.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started my first business when I was 20 years old, and that was my clothing brand Humble Clothing Co. I was barber at the time, but I wanted to create something that I can call my own. I wanted to do something different that not many people were doing, I always loved fashion so thought of clothing brand. Now I had to think about the perfect name, and it came to me so simple. When I first start being a barber at 19, I was just a quiet young man, not much to say, just sat back and observed. Clients will always say “he’s so humble”. So I took that and made it my brand Humble Clothing Co. At the time I knew of nobody personally that had a clothing brand, so I had to figure things out on the fly. Being 20 years old and not understanding how to run a business, it was very difficult. But one thing that I was proud of is that I figured it out. I really took nothing to something. I look back where I came from, and I’m very proud of what I accomplished. It truly let me know whatever I want to do in this life, I can do it. I’m forever humble and grateful.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I remember in 2010 my business partner Jarret and my self started an entertainment company, his was Jnyce ent, and mine was Humble Beginnings. We did different type of events, like poetry shows, comedy shows, wine mixers, speed dating, we threw some really good events. But our dilemma was every event space we threw an event at got shut down, we would have a great event one week, then the next week the place would be shut down. So we constantly had to find new venues. Our last show was a comedy show, turn out was great, the comedians were funny, everybody having a good time, we planned on doing this show every two weeks it was a perfect spot. The next day it got shut down. We pushed on and tried to find a new venue, but we were unsuccessful, So that was the end of our promoting career.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My journey in business has been nothing less of exciting. Although it is not easy, and there are times when you want to give up, you have to pull inspiration from somewhere. It’s been times when I haven’t sold a t-shirt all week, it’s tough to sit in a clothing store all week and receive no sales. It was very discouraging. This is why it is very important to keep solid people around you to keep you motivated. You have to push through those hard times, to get to those beautiful days you seek.
