We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ave Macarthur a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ave thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Hello, Im Ave. Texas Southern University student from Oakland, CA pursing a career in the music industry. I currently am working with the Empower Initiative , EI is a collective that delivers justice-informed leadership training and influence to create the conditions for innovation, creativity and impact at your organization. Later this month ill be working with them in South Africa getting to explore the world, work on my music, and expand my knowledge as a music professional in different countries.
Ave, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Ave is the brother you always wanted. My music is a reflection of what Im is going through at the time and sometimes about past and future ventures and/or experiences. I started experimenting with music 2019 and I started taking it serious around 2020 when I dropped my first tape “GoodLUCK” out on all platforms. It was difficult being queer and black trying to come in an industry where that’s not necessarily the normality. It took me a lot of lonely nights and dedication to what only I could see to make my vision tangible for my audience. Still I haven’t officially started pursing music full-time due to my school and work schedule taking most of my time but Im defiantly getting my feet wet and looking around. I want to be acclimated and aware before I just jump and sign something or do something I can’t take back.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson I had to learn was that people will not and are not obligated to support you. Me being the type of lover, friend , and family member I am , I would always take it personal, I honestly think I still do cause like, what you trynna say? *laughs*. However we all have choices and can do what we want but I definitely have stopped getting as mad and just have been moving accordingly sense.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Anytime someone says my lyrics to me or sings my song back time, the little boy in me cries. It so fulfilling especially when I meet a pac-man who is passionate about my songs, or who say it got them through or to things. Oh, My Pac-Mans make up the MacPack. Those are my babies ,my supporters. If you rock with me, my artistry, my vibe, you’re a Pac-Man/Woman and your apart of the MacPack.
