Avalene, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
Before becoming a Dental Hygienist I worked with a general Dentist. The moment I decided to attend Dental Hygiene school, he and his family were very supportive. He payed for my Dental Hygiene education out of kindness and submitted a hand written letter of recommendation on my behalf. To graduate into a profession with no financial debt of student loans has been the greatest gift and I will forever be thankful.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I fell in love with Preventative Dental Health in the strangest way! Years ago I just wanted a job so I looked in the newspaper and found a job position for a Dental Assistant. I thought to myself, that sounds easy. After calling the office they swiftly informed me that not only should I have experience but education and certification. This led me down the path of Dental Assistant school where I discovered a passion for teeth. While in school I discovered that I had gum disease! With this new found knowledge and after practicing as a Dental Assistant my interest in prevention of gum disease grew and I deceided to take my education a step further.
The Dentist that I practiced with saw my potential and payed for my Dental Hygiene education. I think that as a Dental Hygienist that came from simple means and having dental health problems I have a unique prospective in that I can relate to many people. I am healthy and armed with a wealth of information to share
During the Pandemic many people reached out to me on Instagram asking where they can locate a Dental practice that is open and what to do to maintain oral health at this time.
This need sparked something in me. I was casually creating content on social media and realized now is the time to share my knowledge. So many people had no idea that you should brush for 2 minutes. Something that some of us take for granted many people are unaware of.
I have branded myself Avalene.R social media’s Dental Hygienist. I help Gen z and millennials keep their teeth and smile with confidence. I meet my audience where they are and educate through engaging short form video content.
Sharing engaging dental health information I have close to 3 million followers on social media across all platforms: Tiktok, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Linkedin and Pinterest
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Here are a few book that have created major impact for me:
The 12 week year: This book puts the importance of being organized really into perspective as well as measuring your growth
The Dental Diet: This book explains how the human diet and evolution has a huge role to play in our current health conditions because of our jaw development and airway
Contagious: this book discuss virality and the concept of creating viral content
How to win friends and influence people: Understanding human nature is key to anything in life and in order to establish a good rapport and an affinity with people when educating this book shares many insights
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
With anything in life school, business, career the key is to surround yourself with like minded people. You can grow, learn and brainstorm with people that are ambitious and like minded.
