We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ava Bryant. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ava below.
Ava, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have always known that I was going to pursue a career in the arts, but there have been many moments throughout my life that cemented my passion for performing. The first of these that I can recall took place when I was ten years old. I was a fifth-grader, and I had just written my first song. I took a trip to Nashville for a school club I was in, and I brought my guitar. There is a cafe in Nashville called The Bluebird Cafe, and it is known for its status as the venue where many music icons got their start (e.g. Taylor Swift and Keith Urban). They were having an open mic night, and I signed up. I got up on stage, my hands sweaty and my heart pounding, and I sang my little ten-year-old heart out. The patrons gave me a very generous applause, and I knew I wanted to do this forever.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I grew up in Spring, Texas, and I have been writing and performing since I was ten years old. I strongly believe that music is one of the most important things we have as humans, and I strive to create music that make the listener feel seen. I write primarily pop music, drawing inspiration from artists such as: Taylor Swift, Maggie Rogers, and Julia Michaels. I released my first song, “Always You”, when I was fourteen, and it now has over two million streams on Spotify alone. The song was featured on MTV in May of 2022.
I am most proud of my growth as an artist and person. Throughout my journey, I’ve learned to love the no’s and take them as lessons, and I have really come into my own as a artist. My growth during this past year was so significant that it led me to write and produce my debut EP, “my life so far”. It is my favorite work to date, and I am so excited for people to hear it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To me, it all boils down to connection. Music is such a great tool and such an amazing way to connect with people in a way that isn’t easy to do in your day-to-day life. I try to write in a way that is highly specific to my experiences but still allows for the listener to find a piece of themself in the music. It is always immensely rewarding when people reach out and explain how they relate to my songs and how it feels like it was written for them.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
For the longest time, I was under the impression that, in order to be valuable or successful, I had to be perfect. I think that is something that comes along with growing up as a woman. We have to be the “full package” or we can kiss success goodbye. Recently, I’ve really been trying to deconstruct that belief system and rebuild new and improved beliefs that align with what I now know to be true. What is truly important, especially in the arts, is authenticity. People are not perfect, and there is no need to try and hide that fact.
