We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Autumn Nikol a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Autumn , appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Not at all! I truly believe I started at the perfect time, as it relates to my purpose in life. I started – what I did not know would turn into a successful creative career at 16 years old. This was the time I decided…that thing, I spent 10 years of weekly light therapy sessions trying to remove from my face because I felt it made me “ugly”, was the thing I should have been embracing, i.e. VITILIGO. My career started in front of the camera, and over the years I made my way behind the camera at, until I realized – “Hey! I can do both!”
Autumn , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Full-time mama, full-time social media gal! Outside of my 9-5, which is managing a social community for a wellness company, I also manage my own. I pride myself on building a brand that is not necessarily niched as I feel I wouldn’t be living out my God-given purpose in life if I tried to box myself in. As I always say, I am the JANE OF ALL TRADES lol. IF I had to put a label on myself I’d say a boy mom, wellness aficionado and beauty geek, who is unapologetically herself.
Balancing motherhood and remaining firm in my purpose outside of motherhood is a constant evolution. At this point in my life, one of the things I’m most proud of is how intentional I’ve been when it comes to caring for myself. This is why I try to center my content around, SELFCARE AS A MOM. I absolutely love the community I have built thus far and I’m super excited to watch it grow!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Honestly, one word…AUTHENTICITY. I have stayed true to me all of these years and any moment I felt like I wasn’t (as it is so easy to compare ourselves to others), I would automatically pivot and figure out how to get back to me. Trust me when I say your audience can see when you aren’t being true to yourself and why would you want to build community on insincerity? This will only hurt YOU in the long run, because what your audience expects from you is not what you truly want to do. Do what you enjoy, BE the content.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A message to all of my moms: IT IS NOT SELFISH TO PRIORITIZE MYSELF. When I first became a mom, I felt Iike anything I did for myself was something I could have been doing for my child – then came the mom guilt. It took some time for me to say “Wait…being able to make time for yourself is what will make you an even better mom to your son.” I also made sure to remind myself that self care is not ONE THING. Ask yourself, “What is that thing that raises my dopamine, do that!” I now have a daily 5am morning routine that I call ‘INTENTIONAL ME TIME BEFORE MY CHILD WAKES UP’. It has been life-changing to say the least.
