We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Authors Of The Air a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Authors Of The Air, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As we are in the midst of creating our first album, Modern Waves, it’s hard to find any project yet that holds more meaning. . When we formed Authors of the Air, we agreed that we wanted to be judged not by a genre, but known for our range. We base this album in storytelling and make sure we dress it in experience. We visit indie rock, folky bossa nova, hip hop, punkish physchadelic with alot in between.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are Ben Buono (vocals, guitar), Brad Glanzer (vocals, rap, guitar), Ryan Fairbanks (vocals, bass), and Daniel Layman (drums). Ben Buono has been musical his entire life, starting when he was 6 with drums and evolving into guitar, singing, and songwriting. He grew up with synesthesia which allows him to visually see colors when he hears music and voices. This comes to play when it comes to songwriting because its like painting pictures.
Brad Glanzer is equally talented if he is rapping or if he has a guitar and is singing. He grew into his musical self through the Dallas hip hop scene and became a prominent rapper under the name Script. His effortless ability to provoke the imagination of the listener is mindblowing.
Ryan Fairbanks became a musician when he got Ableton 10 years ago which inspired his creative passion. He started a band called All I Hear Is Static which is still living and breathing today. When the band was starting and we needed a bass player, Ryan stepped up to the role and has never once disappointed. He also engineereed, mixed, and mastered this album.
Daniel Layman is top tier level drummer/musician/producer. From an early age, his ability to percieve rhythm and harmony had always resonated and easily retained like a breathe of fresh air. He grew up in the gospel scene and grew into the drumline scene. His ability to intertwine latin rhythms into funk into gospel to reggae fusion is something to be admired. What he does on this album is extraordinary, a treat for any listener.
The mixture of all of the above is what gives us our unique style, sound, and approach. it bleeds into every song and this album is the culmination of all that we came from.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I have a firm belief that there are no non-creatives. We are all creative in our own way be it as big as an art form or as small as a conversation. We are all creative. The biggest driving force behind diving into a creative lifestyle is openness and happiness. It brings joy to transform feelings into sounds or colors on a canvas. It brings happiness to see things from a different perspective. That’s all there is to it and everyone’s invited.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The connection! There is a certain point in the experience of music when the listener connects to the artist. It is where music transcends you beyond your body and you discover a connection the music has to your soul. That place where listener meets artist on a spiritual level is an experience that can change and transform and lift you. The reward is to experience it on both sides; as a listener of music and an artist. Our repeating wish as a band is that this album does this exact thing for everyone who hears it.
