We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Author Untamed. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Author below.
Hi Author, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Being that I have had a regular job, I can say with complete sincerity that I am a thousand percent happier being a creative. I am at my best when I am in my creative realm. My stress levels are decreased. I am more productive. My attitude toward all things, in general, is more positive and lighter. Overall, I am happier. How could I not be? I am doing what I love, not only as a hobby but for a living. Not being tied to a regular job affords me the opportunity to be present in my children’s and husband’s lives. We can plan vacations, attend their events or I can simply take care of the day-to-day functions for my family that I would not have been able to do if I were at a regular job. Not many people can say they are at a job doing what they love. My creative space also allows me to include my loved ones. I often bounce ideas off my husband, and he and my children attend my events. My children have been instrumental in assisting with social media. My son has even been a Production Assistant and an extra in the movies I produced. It is truly a family affair.
There was once that I thought, perhaps I should scale back and go back to a regular job, and I almost had an anxiety attack. Within moments, all of the thoughts about losing my creative time and open availability to my family flooded my brain, and my heart started racing. It was the worst one-minute thought of my life. Honestly, there is nothing better than being able to do what you love and fulfill your purpose without restraints.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got started in the industry because I had an inkling that was ever persistent that I wanted to do more with my writing. After asking God for a sign, I heard Tyler Perry accept an award and he stated, “You know when you’re meant to do something when you try to leave it alone but it won’t leave you alone.” That night I sat down to write the book that would later become my first publishing novel.
Writing novels is how my professional career began. Fun fact about that is my pen name, Untamed. The meaning behind that is that I refused to be tamed, in my pen or to a genre. I feel as though as long as I have a gift of writing that there are no stipulations on what I can write. Therefore, I have novels in romance, urban fiction, crime thrillers, and poetry. That grind and mindset have also produced several other opportunities. I am a screenwriter and a ghostwriter. I am currently an event columnist for Intellectual Ink Magazine, which highlights black creatives in the literary industry.
Likewise, in 2016, I launched Untamed Publishing, which provides publishing services for new and seasoned authors, such as synopsis writing, editing, and book trailers, to name a few. This venture led me to create my own podcast, the Get Caught Up podcast, which offers tips to authors and interviews for authors. Our aim is to highlight newer and independent POC authors, but we do include seasoned and mainstream authors as well.
Most recently, I am a part of the Boss Magnet Media team as a film producer and so far, I have produced two films, with many more slated for 2023.
I am most proud of living out my dreams. In fact, I am living out my wildest dreams. When I started this journey, my only wish was to be the best author I could be, and my work ethic and relentless grind have afforded me many more beautiful opportunities.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the impact I have had on the lives of others around me. I fully embrace the fact that my success isn’t just for me. It’s to motivate my children, inspire others around me, and provide those same opportunities that were provided to me. I am blessed to be a blessing, and I never want to lose sight of that.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society can best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem by making room for all creatives. The best way to support is to support. Spread the word about the creatives you know, share their posts on social media, attend shows or events, and purchase their products or services. You never know; you might be that one reason that a creative doesn’t give up. You may be the person that creative needs to meet to move to that next level. You may be the difference between a meal tonight or hunger; sometimes it’s that basic and important — just to meet an essential need. Embrace the creative entrepreneurial spirit and encourage others to do the same.
