We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Austyn Cage. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Austyn below.
Alright, Austyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Music has always been a huge influence in my life, including early childhood. I grew up on mostly hip hop music which is what inspired me to start rapping in the first place. I wrote my first lyrics in middle school in the middle of class and at the time it was just something fun for me to do. As I got older, I became more invested in the craft and began writing entire songs from start to finish. I believe the moment I knew this was the path for me was when I was 19 and did a rap competition in Atlanta with a friend of mine and we won first place. The atmosphere was crazy and the crowd was really feeling our performance. It wasn’t even a question for me after that night. I knew I was born for the creative and artistic lifestyle.
Austyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Pursuing audio engineering in college gave me a huge advantage forward in creating music for me. While attending, I was able to learn studio work, both analog and digital, as well as network with various individuals with similar goals and talents. Networking is really a slept on necessity in this day and age. I am proud to be part of an independent record label known as a Red House 409 that was started by a friend of mine while in college. It’s about 15 to 20 of us in the group, maybe more, all with different skill sets. Audio engineering comes in handy because we can have creative control over every aspect of the music that we create because we do everything in house.. Everything ranging from audio engineering to video production to photography to social media marketing skills. Anything we need, we got it.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To be honest, I just want to live life and have fun expressing myself through my music. I’m 23 right now and I feel like I still have a lot of growing to do as an artist. Music for me is an outlet and I would say my end goal as an artist is just to be a voice for those that feel like they can’t speak up. Our generation has been hit with the pandemic, inflation, recession, etc. It’s honestly exhausting for those of us who are just trying to figure out life as new young adults. But we have to remember that we are still young with a lot of life left to live and we must find the beauty in the little moments of joy that we have in this crazy time. We can’t give up, we must continue to live and fight. That’s what I want my legacy to be.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Networking is the main resource. Growing up, I was mostly antisocial and generally uncomfortable around people. I would always find myself somewhere alone or in a corner while out a family gathering or something like that. That mentality followed me into my early adulthood which is a main factor that prohibited me from expanding further as an artist early in my career. A lot of times it’s not what you know, but rather WHO you know. A person’s entire life can change just off of meeting the right individual or learning the right information. If I could give advice all artists out there that are just starting out, I would say focus on the networking just as much as recording, mixing and mastering. You could have the hottest song of the year and it wouldn’t mean a thing if no one hears it.
