We were lucky to catch up with Austin Younger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
I have been looking for opportunities to direct and make videos with people for several years. I had so many ideas, but I lacked the confidence to make something myself. Seeing my peers making advancements in their own careers inspired me to take the initiative and put myself out there to prospective clients. All I needed was to start being vocal about my ideas. The moment I started to talk about my ideas out loud, friends began to express support and started to hold me accountable, and encourage me to start producing my first music video.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started by working and volunteering on several small, low-budget productions, filling any role that anyone would give me. Searching, more professional growth opportunities became very scarce, and I wasn’t sure how to get any sort of experience. So, I took it upon myself to learn and practice different editing software, so I could have a better understanding. From there, I began to put myself out there and seek out opportunities where I could take the driver’s seat by directing, producing, and editing for anyone willing to let me take their music and make something out of it. Ever since, I have been building my reel and expanding the scale of my productions.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Making something that I am proud to put into the world for others to watch and interact with is an intoxicating feeling. I will spend countless hours working on a project, spending months of pre and post-production. All of this work and then sometimes getting only a couple hundred views in the first few weeks of the video’s release. That sounds very unfortunate, but the views don’t change the fact that I am proud of the product that I made. Regardless of the outcome, if I feel proud of the result, that’s the most fulfilled I can be as a creative.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
It’s not always as glamorous as it seems. Most creatives that I know need multiple jobs to sustain themselves long enough to actually make a living from their art. No success is guaranteed, so patience is a necessity, but it’s also a luxury that most can’t afford. The rewards can be great, but the journey is usually long and requires a lot of patience and resiliency.
