Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Austin Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Austin , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Having a passion for what you are doing is fundamental. I didn’t have family or friends who worked in the industry, so I mostly learned through observing on set and just refusing to quit. The last few years we’ve seen a lot more technology integrate into production, and new technology is always evolving so there’s an element of learning as you go and making sure everything you’re learning is cumulative. By staying current with new technology, I’ve been blessed to have worked on some cutting edge systems and products; like volumetric video with Intel Trueview, player puck tracking and on ice graphics with SMT, and VAR and other systems with SONY. I never felt successful in school, but have realized as an adult that I learn in a more practical way and wish I could have told my younger self that my grades weren’t going to be indicative of my future success.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I originally thought that I wanted to be a Broadcast Journalist; I did the school news in high school and then joined the Army and was put in a Public Affairs unit my junior year. After the military I had no idea what I wanted to do and by happenstance I was asked to fill in for a crew member on a Division 2 championship football game in Florence, Alabama with ESPN. That was 11 years ago and I still talk to everyone from that crew. I think everything happens for a reason and I was always destined to be a storyteller, whether in front of the camera or behind it. I’m starting to branch out from large production and am creating more personal projects about the things I’m passionate about with Thr33MEDIA. Thr33MEDIA’s mission is twofold; keeping myself inspired and giving back to the community. I believe storytellers are called on to share their talent with the world, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with some really cool non-profits. A few of my favorites are: Balanced Veterans Network, BVN’s mission is to provide a safe space for community, education, advocacy, and empowerment of alternative therapies for veterans and their families; Soul’d Creative Collective, a creative nonprofit providing safe spaces for BIPOC creatives through collaboration, access, and education; and MoonDAO, an open platform to fund, collaborate, and compete on challenges that get us closer to a lunar settlement.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Anyone that works freelance knows it’s a difficult journey, I continued to pursue production while going to college and always worked multiple side jobs. Deciding whether to pursue my degree or pursue my dreams was a really scary moment in time. I had virtually no support, but mentally I was committed to Film and TV, in the beginning it was a lot of driving and sleeping in my car. There were a lot of times where I was really tested and freelance life almost broke me. Even to this day, I get worried where my next job will come from but I remember all I have been though up until this point and continue to trust the process.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think the mission is, even if for a brief moment, transporting people to another world, another persons shoes, learning something interesting, inspiring someone to think different, to keep people curious. The more I learn the more connected I feel. I want other people to feel that.
