We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Austin Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Austin , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
Absolutely love being around motivated individuals and decided to join a group fitness gym when I first moved to Los Angeles.
Have always had a passion for helping others and naturally was trying to motivated the others around me.
One of the coaches noticed this and asked if I ever thought about becoming a trainer.
Was beyond grateful to even be considered and a thought man that’s a lot of pressure. Great things come from stepping out of that comfort zone so I decided to give it a go.
My first class went absolutely awful. People that were rooting me on even were like what the heck was that!?
I felt not only a let down in myself but mostly the others around me.
I looked at this failure as motivation and studied more into the field.
Became passionate about making this opportunity the most enjoyable experience for others to be around.
The workouts, music, the energy, making fitness fun!
I started to improve and now can say I’ve done training around Los Angeles, California and the world helping others with health and wellness!
Extremely grateful if the people I continue to meet. This whole experience has taught me to take chances and understand you can use failure as opportunities to learn and grow.
It’s truly only a failure if you’ve given up 🙏
Austin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Grew up in Iowa! Graduated from Northern Iowa with a Bachelors Degree in Therapeutic Recreation. Worked at a hospital providing services to improve the quality of life.
Would focus on Rehabilitation activities to help the patient become as independent as possible before becoming discharged.
Also worked in the behavioral health unit helping others with coping skills free of self harm:
What I’m most proud of is people coming up to make saying I’ve made a difference in their lives. That puts so much energy in me to keep motivating and inspire others to their true potential.
This transitioned to the journey to LA where I now work in the health and wellness field with group and personal training. Also help others break out of their comfort zones by participating in Cold Plunges!
Great things can come from breaking out of that comfort zone. The most challenge step is always the first one but you’ll be surprised of how far you can go with a positive mindset!
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Absolutely being around the right type of people. We can often get lost in the “Grind” or the moment but when you’re around others that hold you accountable, that’s where we can go above and beyond our goals!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Be honest, be genuine, sincere, and listen. We sometimes get so passionate in shelling out information and to focus on solving the solutions but not so much on the individual. Everyone has a backstory. Their true motive of why they want to improve their quality of life. Why do they really want to improve? A true deeper meaning, peeling back focusing on the intrinsic motivation. People can read well, especially in such a competitive field. So what qualities are going to set you apart? I believe it’s truly connecting with the person you’re working with
