Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Austin Wallace. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Austin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I studied and researched all things Photography. Things like YouTube and shooting with experienced artists helped me grow within my craft.
Although I am much more knowledgeable now, I like the pace I learned at and I’m still learning. I will never stop learning. My learning process is purely by experience and I just try to get as many as I can.
My imagination paired with my ability to capture at different angles is what makes my work unique. The editing process has also become a great marriage to what my visions are before I shoot.
I think the biggest obstacle is time. Having a job, coaching and other daily life activities can be difficult to work around. The more time you put into your passion, the more you get out of it.
Austin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always loved art and Photography. I would be on business trips and in my down time I would take photos. The people who seen the photos would say things like, “you have a good eye!” The more I heard it, the more I became fond of buying a camera. I wanted to take the craft more serious and be intentional about it. I sell prints, frames [of my photos] and conduct photoshoots. I shoot parties, portraits, events and more.
I am most proud of the network I’ve built and the successful art shows I’ve been apart of. As a self taught Photography, I knew the trials I would face being completely new to the art community. But, I am genuinely proud of how I set goals and pursued them relentlessly. Between my Instagram account and the shows I’ve done in various cities, I have enjoyed the process and made some great connections for not only art- but my life.
I want people to know that my art is a representation of hard work and innovation. The freedom to create art and opportunity is unmatched. I want people to feel inspired by my work, my ethics and my journey.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is having a vision and bringing it to life. And I have to admit; seeing and hearing people enjoy my work is gratifying.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Simply put, I built my following with consistent exposure of my work, thorough research of the audience I wanted to attract and doing small projects that stood out from other creatives. For instance, I created a project series I do every October called ‘Scared October Shotz.’ This series is done on my Instagram account. From the 1st to the 31st, I post a picture of characters via costume. Each day is like a page out of a book as I tell a story in the caption for the whole 31 day month. The pictures are taken in various places. I develop the story as we go. I basically come up with the next page or part based off the photos and feel of them. This project is fun and unique, but the stories are typically geared toward mental health and trauma awareness. So I get to produce something that focuses on two things I implore.
