Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Austin Tremblay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Austin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents taught me discipline at a very young age. They taught me to never give up even when everything seems to be going the wrong way. Nothing can stop hard work and dedication. Another attribute my father always instilled into me and my brothers is to have a positive attitude in every situation. I think that needs to be true especially in this industry. It’s so easy for things to go south on a set but If you can control those negative thoughts and turn them into positive ones no matter the situation especially as a DP, I think there is no failing.
Austin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up just north of Toronto, Canada in a small town. I always had a passion for movies and the industry but never quite acted upon it until I was about 20 years old. I went to Toronto Film School where I learned all the basics to the industry and craft. This is where I fell in love with Cinematography and visually telling stories through lighting and camera. I then decided to make the move to Los Angeles where I studied Cinematography at New York Film Academy located in Burbank. Here I am now having just completed the program following my dream.
I tend to spend a lot of time on Lighting. It is niche I have really fallen in love with. I find myself watching hours of YouTube videos on new lighting technologies and how Cinematographers are using new methods to light efficiently for the fast paced industry these days. I try to learn as much as possible, not only because I really love what I do but also because I want to be ahead in the game. The industry is constantly changing and I think there is really no time to sit back and relax and I love that.
I have a hard time sitting at home and doing nothing. For some reason it stresses me out and I have always been like that. I think that’s why I love this craft so much because it never ends and it’s always go, go, go.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For sure, deep down I am very competitive although I never really show it. I think what strives me is my want to get to the top. It kind of circulates in the back of my head all the time. I want to try and be the best I can be and one day hopefully impact and influence a next generation of Cinematographer’s.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding feeling for me is when I can take theory or a new aspect to lighting and implement it into real life on set and have it work the exact way I intended. Being able to walk into a room and transform it to have a certain look or feel is something special and it’s truly what I love most about my job.
