Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Austin Prario. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Austin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
The best way to learn is to do. Knowing what I know now, I would have encouraged myself to just get out there and create. It doesn’t have to be serious, it doesn’t have to be perfect, the act of creation is rewarding in and of itself. The people you meet along the way are essential. The skills you learn in the creative act are unteachable. Everyone is different and everyone learns in different ways, and this contributes to your unique voice. For me, the main obstacle was always a lack of resources. I didn’t know enough people or have enough budget. But you don’t need all of that. Create with what you have.

Austin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a filmmaker, video producer, director, writer, and editor. After graduating from NYU Tisch’s film program with a focus in writing and directing, I co-founded my own production company. Since then, I have produced, directed, shot, and edited short films, fashion films, docs, and ads.
I am most proud of my hands-on experience in all aspects of the video making process. I feel as though having a deep understanding of the end-to-end process helps you create a better product.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My advice would be to listen. It’s as simple as that. Listen to your team, hear what they are feeling, hear what they need, and implement what works best for everyone. When your team is happy, when they are working on something they believe in, it creates a better end product.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
If you are interested in film and video, storytelling is very much about perspective. Having a unique and well rounded voice is what makes you worth a watch. The ability to connect through a unique lens is what makes you stand out. Independent and international cinema both offer new or perspective changing ideas and techniques that may alter or add to your views of the medium. Studying these projects has influenced my philosophy, and I have implemented this change into my own work. I always like to look outside my sphere of influence while still maintaining what makes me, me.
