We were lucky to catch up with Austin Marsh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Austin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I am currently in the midst of a meaningful project. In the late winter months of 2023, I convened in a Northeast Indiana recording studio with my band, Austin & the Avenue, where we began recording and creating our third album. Since 2020, we have been a folk/rock band working on crafting an original sound. And being unsigned and completely independent from any major record label, it may come as no surprise that it’s a fairly difficult path. But no matter, it’s still a labor of love and makes each project mean that much more. Austin & the Avenue, and the music that has been released under that name since 2021, is a deeply meaningful endeavor. The band has allowed total freedom of exploration as the sole singer and songwriter, and I look forward to sharing more personal and meaningful songs with the world later this summer.
Austin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I caught the music bug early, at about age 6. Even from that time, it was always apparent to me that I wanted to be a musical artist in some capacity. I’ve spent much of the time since then putting in my “10,000 hours” and crafting my ability with each note sung and played. As for Austin & the Avenue, that is a more recent endeavor. I’ve been pushing for the expansion of the band since it’s original inception in early 2020. Funnily enough, right when the world was shutting down due to Covid, I felt as if my artistic abilities and visions were just beginning to feel open and free. I think my songwriting, and the Avenue’s sound, is set aside from others in the region because it’s anchored in a rootsy feel and high quality of production. Even though we are an unsigned band, I have managed to produce our three albums to the best of my knowledge from my training at the University of Saint Francis Music Technology program in Fort Wayne, IN. One of the things I’m most proud of with Austin & the Avenue would have to be that it’s uniquely mine. No one will take these songs from me and or rob me of all the positive memories I’ve made with my band mates, Colin Boyd (drums & percussion) and Lance Roberts (bass guitar).
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Personally, I’d have to say getting to play my songs in front of people and build an audience in an organic way. I’m a Midwest creative man, and can’t think of a better way to exercise those abilities than to take it to “the people”. Additionally, I always look forward to the rewarding feelings that come on the night of an album release. We have collectively put in months of work, and it feels so fantastic to put songs out into the world that I feel so strongly about.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
That’s a great question, but not one I really think about terribly often. Not actively, anyway. I work to keep my ears and heart open to the beauty in the ordinary, and channel those thoughts and emotions into song. People I’ve known, people I wish to know, the man I once was, the man I am now, emotions I see manifest in others, and the longing for more of everything whilst being content with all the good fortunes that have come my way. Those are all themes that meld into my work as a songwriter.
