We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Austin, Hannah a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Austin, Hannah, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning how to podcast is something that we’re forever learning more about. New challenges arise the farther we get into producing content, and we’re always having to learn new tricks to get over the hurdles. One thing we’ve run into a few times recently has been issues with audio quality. We’ve learned a lot about the equipment we use and the tools we have available to us in post-production, and we only learn more as new issues arise. We feel like this is something we’ll never stop learning about, and it just makes us all the better at what we do as we face these, and other, challenges.
Having guests on our show has proven to be more difficult than we initially thought, and we had to come to the conclusion that we’re just not quite set up properly for it. But it’s pushed us to expand our knowledge, and in turn, expand on the quality of the content we put out.
Austin, Hannah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We’re just two cousins from Minnesota who are fascinated by the macabre. We’ve both loved podcasts that talk about true crime, paranormal, and dark history. We used to go on long car rides and just talk about these things for hours on end. Eventually, we decided we should put microphones in front of ourselves and create a podcast that we’d enjoy listening to. We wanted to share dark topics with some fun and goofy banter, and we noticed that there was room for that within the genre. Our goal was to create a podcast that feels like you’re hanging around with friends and talking about your morbid curiosities.
Austin has always been interested in true crime and the things that make you go “Wait, WHAT?” And Hannah has always been drawn to the paranormal and in tune with it, as well as being fascinated by the lesser-known, dark parts of history. Together we’ve been able to make something that we’re both incredibly proud of and we’re happy to share it with the world.
The progress and growth we’ve made in the last year has been amazing and fun to watch, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
A really great way to support creatives is by sharing them with those around you. Whether that’s interacting with and sharing things on social media or talking with friends about the artists and products you like. Word of mouth is an underrated form of promotion; people are more likely to look into something or someone that came highly recommended by someone in their circle. Sharing things on social media and talking about them is such an easy way to help the creatives you enjoy get more eyes (or ears) on their work, and in turn, allow them to continue to put their best foot forward and grow in their industry.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
We’ve both had to relearn how to communicate effectively with each other. We found that after years of being in collaborative environments and working with very strong-headed people, we were nervous to tell the other what we thought about different ideas. We’ve both been overlooked regarding things we’ve felt strongly about, and it took us a few months to realize that we were capable of having a conversation about our thoughts and ideas with each other and, not only come to a compromise, but usually agree with each other. It’s been very refreshing working together in such a balanced way, and we feel like it makes us a strong duo that can take anything head-on.
