We were lucky to catch up with Austin Chambers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Austin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
The legacy that I want to build is to be someone who can connect people through emotion. When I am gone, I want people to be able to see my work, and say “I understand”. Simple as that! I know that If someone can see my work, and it can make a difference rather it be that one person or the world; my job is done!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Austin Chambers, I go by Aft6ix (after six). I’m based in Columbus, Ohio but creatively I’m worldwide! I always knew the design umbrella was going to be where I ended up. My first love is illustration. It is a natural talent that I’ve always found it easy to express emotions through drawing. During my high school Career Center Program, I found Graphic Design & Photography, and the rest is history. By the time I graduated from Columbus College of Art & Design, I developed an understanding of who I would be as a creative. Currently since I have a large scope of interests, I provide a multifaceted freelance service. As a designer the problem I solve for my clients is to speak for them visually. I achieve this by research and taking a deep interest and understanding of my clients vision. Therefore, creating piece that evokes emotion based on a story. This makes my journey a bit harder because I don’t focus on one art style, product, or genre. However, I take pride in every project that I take part in. To anyone who sees my work I would like them to slow down and realize that everything has a story or purpose, and never take life at face value.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
There is! The main thing I wish I had learned in college, is that the people you graduate with, will be your biggest assists and competitors. While attending CCAD I had friends but work-wise I was a lone-wolf. I wish I had built better relationships because, me now realizing that having those resources would make a world of a difference in how your work gains exposure. It’s the difference between having your application over looked due to a large number of applicants, and a recommendation.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I have worked with clients from a startup business, colleges, corporations, and other artists and the best feeling is knowing that you can solve a problem for them. The fact that you can give an idea a vision, or a brand a voice by creating something and giving it life is unmatched!
