We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aurora Vilchis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aurora below.
Aurora, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has Covid resulted in any major changes to your business model?
Covid-19 definitely hit all of our small businesses. In the beginning clients backed out, cancelled contracts, choose not to re-new, etc. as the unknown affected us all. However, as time went on, I actually found an increase in inquiries thus generating more revenue due to the nature of my business. Many brick and mortars needed to move online, businesses and corporations now had the time and space to invest in re-brands, new logo and website updates as well as creating and updating video and photography content for their businesses. I am so grateful to have been able to aide businesses in that transition and business has continued to move in that direction thereafter. I am thankful to be in a space and profession in which we can use technology for good.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started as a professional photographer ten years ago. I have always been a creative and loved design elements in any space be that home, personal style and ultimately the world wide web. As a tween I was enamored by coding my accounts to create custom colors, shapes and add photos and create template designs. My journey didn’t lead me far from that. During my years as a professional wedding photographer, I found myself becoming more drawn to the marketing and design side of it. I loved creating postcards, updating my website and decided to move full force ahead. I had friends who would ask me to make their website for them and decided to start charging and call it a business! 5 years later and I have created a brand that helps businesses create an impactful online platform. My team provides web and logo design and photography and videography content for businesses and brands.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson on friends and business has been an interesting one! Often times (unless they are a business owner themselves) others don’t understand the back end process and extensive time, money and work involved in building a business. Working for yourself really means working for others because if we aren’t fulfilling our obligations to clients, our reputation is on the line. I believe in the hand full 5. Give your services or products to 5 people (family or friends) that are the die hards, lifer, supporters and respecters of your role! Beyond that, your friends should want to support and pay someone they know for their service they need provided. If you aren’t making money, it isn’t a business. It’s a hobby.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Consistency and brand identity! I always tell clients the big 3: Who, What and How. Who you are, what service you provide and how they can book you (call to action). Imagery and design should always be consistent in order to create a brand identity that other’s can recognize before they even see your name (ie: colorful photos + design + same fonts = your fun pool design brand or sage color = your skin care line). Your feed should be your handshake (showing your profession and your work), your STORIES are a hug (more personal, fun content).
