We recently connected with Aurora Fox and have shared our conversation below.
Aurora , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew this was the life I had to pursue after the very first time I performed in a show. I was freshly 8 years old, at my small town theatre in Wasilla, Alaska. I had no lines, but was a singing bird. My mom later told me, as an adult, that I wasn’t very good. But being up there, apart of storytelling, was the best feeling in the world. I was floating for weeks afterwards.

Aurora , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a writer, actor, filmmaker, and aspiring director. I write dramatic films about troubling female leads- my main interests are are about young women facing a troubling decision or a gaining or losing of faith. It really intrigues me to read and write about stories where the personal stakes are really, really high.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that you needed to have a degree in what you’re doing to do it! I did not go to film school, I have a BA from a great university in NYC- I took screenwriting classes but had no idea how to make a film. I read lots of books, listened to a lot of interviews – but at a certain point, you just have to dive in. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, you just have to take a leap of faith and pave the way yourself sometimes. I believe if you wait until you’re ready, you’ll never do it. Be scared, and do it anyway.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
There is so much about this lifestyle that is still a mystery for me- I am only in my mid-twenties and just figuring out what I want. I think our society is really caught up on the stereotypical life plan- college, marriage, kids, retirement. The life of an artist doesn’t always follow that- because we can’t guarantee when/where we will be working. There is a general go-with-the-flow and hands-off attitude you have to have! Sometimes other people in my life have a harder time with that than I do.
