We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aunna Duncan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Aunna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?

The biggest risk I have ever taken is probably putting my products in a store for the first time. I was about 8 months into running my business and saw a post on Instagram for a store that was opening not too far away from me, looking for local vendors. I replied to the Instagram post and went and set up my products on a shelf about a month later. It definitely was nerve-racking but was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Aunna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I’m Aunna Duncan, I am the CEO and Founder of Aunna Cosmetics and a high school student from Ohio. Since I was little, I have always made lip and body scrubs with my mom in our kitchen. So, during quarantine, I decided to take my love for beauty to the next level and started Aunna Cosmetics. I began with our hydrating lip glosses and slowly started adding things like our plumping lip gloss, our best-selling whipped lip scrubs, body scrubs, bath salts, and body silks. Things that inspire Aunna Cosmetics products are things I’m interested in and/or love, like pop culture, music, and fashion. I also spend a lot of time on Aunna Cosmetics social media making the products match the aesthetic I think will complement it at that moment. it is really important to me that all my products are clean, which means making sure they are vegan and cruelty-free. I also make sure that my body care products are made of natural ingredients like shea butter, mango butter, and coconut oil.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

When it comes to building an audience on social media, I believe that being authentic and true to yourself is the best way to go. I focus on creating content that I genuinely would watch and that aligns with my brand. My advice for those wanting to build their social media presence is to share content that you are passionate about, and it will attract people who share the same interests as you. Also, consistency is key. Respond to comments and messages. Building a relationship and connection with your followers will help you grow your audience. Most importantly, have fun!

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?

The best source of new clients for me has been markets and in-person events. These opportunities have allowed me to showcase my products and directly engage with my customers. Being able to interact face-to-face has helped me establish amazing relationships with my customers and other businesses. Additionally, markets and events provide a platform to demonstrate the value of what I offer and receive immediate feedback, which has been amazing when expanding my client base.
