We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Augusto Esquivel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Augusto, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
This is a very tricky question. I was ready to do the things I did, when I did them. Like everything in life the point is not to spend time thinking about the past, but work on your skills (personal, psychological, physical, emotional, professional) to be the best artist you can be today.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started working as an assistant for an artist and that sparked a passion that was long forgotten. I remember how good I was with tools and the satisfaction of producing things with my hands. Very soon the inspiration came like an explosion. I started my own work and from there I developed my own technique. I am very proud of the fact that I was able to face and overcome the fear of working for someone, venturing into the uncertainty of making a living with your own creations.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think the best thing a society can do to support the artistic mind is to start having conversations about how money is not the most critical drive in the world. We have to debate how much money is too much money, and how we can distribute the resources more equitably. We have to realize the human mind and creativity are the most valuable resources and should be prioritized above all, with free education, and free universal health care. In this scenario, artists will not only thrive but grow…

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the originality of my work. To know that I can make a living with what I create with my own hands, to understand that what I create has emotional value and is relevant in this society, is very satisfying. To be present in the process of creation and feel you have accomplished something meaningful is a fulfilling experience…
