We caught up with the brilliant and insightful August Wolfe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
August, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Countless hours were spent on Youtube, Tik Tok, and Instagram learning how to work with resin. However, I must say that most knowledge I have gained has come from trial and error. Endless mistakes and different techniques have gotten me to where I am today. Resin is such a tricky product in the first place and so many different factors go into the final “look” of the pieces. Not only does working with resin take patience, but it also takes high-quality materials and products to achieve the end product. I always compare mixing resin to a science project. Heat, humidity, and exact measurements are just a few of the factors necessary for a crystal-clear finish. The most essential skill in learning resin for me has been an infrared heat gun. I wish I would have used one earlier in the process of learning and looking back I am not sure how I didn’t. It would have saved me from multiple breakdowns and provided many answers to “why does this keep happening?” Obstacles that stood in the way and still do are external factors that I cannot control. Sometimes the manufacturer’s product varies, some days are more humid and hot, and sometimes bubbles in the resin will not go away no matter what you do. It has been a constant learning process and I love the challenge.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I preserve wedding and memorial flowers from people all over the US. I am so fortunate to preserve the most special memories as forever keepsakes as well as connecting with total strangers. I have found a whole community within the Instagram resin community and I know I can ask questions/vent to them anytime! Preserving flowers in resin is not always easy but the result is always so worth it. I put my heart and soul into every piece and I am a crazy perfectionist. Resin has humbled me in the sense that as much as I have control over the majority of it, I am still working with a chemical that reacts in its way based on so many different factors. It has truly been one of the biggest learning curves I have experienced and has pushed me to trust myself more than ever.
I am so proud of how far August in Full Bloom has come! I never in a million years expected it to blossom as much as it has but it makes me so excited for what’s to come. I have been fortunate to connect with brides from so many different states. The trust people put in me to preserve their precious memories is an honor and not something I take lightly. Creating my own business pushed me out of my comfort zone and has allowed me to challenge myself to grow in so many ways. I am so thankful for everyone who has supported me from the beginning and all the growth to come!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is such a powerful tool. You literally have the world at your fingertips. My best advice is to post, post and post more. If people aren’t looking at your stuff, they are looking at someone else’s. It is tough running a small business and feeling like a full-time content creator. Everything is content for your small business. The best part of social media is the community. Being friendly and reaching out to other small businesses used to make me so nervous, however, it has now become my favorite aspect of social media! While it is very satisfying to get likes and comments, having a thread showing all the beautiful pieces I have worked so hard on keeps me going. It shows me just how far I’ve come in this process and just how much further I have to grow. Supporting your friend’s small businesses on IG changes everything! Support small!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is so rewarding knowing I get to create a forever keepsake from the most special memories. It is so rewarding to know that the flowers are frozen in time. Sweet little reminders throughout your daily routines pop up in your house of items from your favorite day, taking you back in time to the most precious memories.
