We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Audrey Knodell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Audrey below.
Alright, Audrey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Over the course of your career, have you seen or experienced your field completely flip-flop or change course on something?
I began my career in aesthetic medicine at a time where the field was beginning a major shift—one that’s moved away from the “frozen” or overly dramatic results toward a more natural, nuanced approach. There was a time when the focus was largely on quick fixes and visible changes, rather than prioritizing the underlying health of the skin and body. But today, there’s a strong movement toward subtle, age-appropriate enhancements that honor the individual’s unique features, rather than trying to make everyone look the same.
This shift has been accompanied by a growing emphasis on holistic wellness and regenerative medicine. We’re now looking at and promoting more treatments that address the root causes of aging, such as slowed rate of cellular turnover, decreased collagen production, skin integrity degradation. Additionally, clinicians on the whole take whole-body health into consideration. The staple products of non-surgical aesthetics, namely Botox and filler, are not going anywhere, but the way in which we administer these products has changed to a more conservative approach. It’s exciting to be part of an era where we can not only slow down the signs of aging but also rejuvenate and revitalize from the inside out, creating results that feel both fresh and authentically ‘you.’ I am grateful for the time I entered this field, as a staple of my practice has always been on restoration rather than augmentation.
As the industry evolves, there’s a deeper understanding that beauty doesn’t lie in perfection, but in balance and vitality—something that enhances one’s natural features while promoting overall well-being.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a registered nurse with over 8 years of experience and an entrepreneur in aesthetic medicine. My career began in neonatal intensive care, where I worked in top pediatric institutions across the country. The NICU, with its strict protocols and high-stakes environment, was the ideal setting for me. The attention to detail and quick decision-making required in that role laid a strong foundation for my transition into aesthetics.
Though I loved my work in the NICU, I have always been drawn to the science of beauty and aging. After experiencing the impact of aesthetic treatments myself—especially how they boosted my confidence ahead of my own wedding—I knew this was the path I wanted to follow. The profound psychological benefits of aesthetics became clear to me, and I made it my mission to help others feel confident and empowered in their own skin.
In 2021, I fully transitioned into aesthetic medicine, leveraging my clinical background to prioritize safety and education. I trained with top experts in anatomy and plastic surgery, continually expanding my knowledge to ensure the best outcomes for my clients. This dedication eventually led me to open my own practice, where I continue to train with the best in this industry and continue leveling up my practice to deliver nothing but the best for anyone who sits in my chair.
My practice, Authentic Aesthetics, is a boutique aesthetic studio specializing in neurotoxin treatments like Botox and Dysport, fillers, regenerative treatments such as Sculptra and Radiesse, restorative treatments like chemical peels, and curated skincare. Our goal is not to change you, but to restore and elevate your natural beauty, helping you live confidently in every aspect of your life. People seek these treatments for so many reasons, and whether you’re preparing for a special event, mourning a loss, or simply investing in self-care, I’m here to help you embody your highest self.
At Authentic Aesthetics, we offer personalized consultations, expert care, and treatments designed to enhance your natural beauty with longevity and integrity. My promise to all patients is that I will never recommend a treatment unless I truly believe it is the best choice for you and will yield your best outcome. I am passionate about ensuring you are comfortable from the time you walk in and leave feeling like the best version of yourself, and we’ve created a calming, relaxing space for you to do just that.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
While training and knowledge are absolutely essential in aesthetic medicine, I believe empathy and the ability to truly connect with people are just as critical for success. A large part of this field involves understanding clients’ needs, which almost always go beyond the surface. Many times, people come in with concerns they may not even fully understand themselves, and it’s my job to listen, ask the right questions, and dig deeper to uncover what’s really at the heart of their visit.
Building trust is key, and that starts with taking a genuine interest in my patients—not just as clients, but as people. By taking the time to understand both their emotional and physical needs, I can help guide them toward a plan that will make them feel not just better about their appearance, but more confident and empowered in every aspect of their lives. When you understand peoples’ stories, motivations, and unique challenges, you can create a much more personalized and meaningful treatment plan. It’s not just about offering a procedure; it’s about developing a partnership where clients feel truly heard, valued, and supported throughout the process.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes, without a doubt, I would choose the same profession and specialties again. Nursing has been an incredibly rewarding journey, and I’ve had the privilege of working in several vastly different yet deeply fulfilling fields— mainly neonatal nursing and aesthetic nursing. While they may seem worlds apart, each has helped me grow in unique ways, cultivate valuable skills, and make a meaningful impact on others’ lives.
In the NICU, I learned the importance of precision, quick decision-making, and compassion under pressure. The high-stakes environment taught me how to care for the most fragile of patients with the utmost attention and dedication. Transitioning into aesthetic nursing allowed me to apply my clinical expertise in a new way, focusing on enhancing people’s confidence and well-being through beauty and wellness. Both specialties, though different, have allowed me to educate, care for, and support individuals in ways that bring me immense personal and professional fulfillment.
One of the reasons I believe nursing is such a powerful profession is its versatility. It offers the unique opportunity to pivot across various specialties, work in diverse settings, and continue growing through continuing education—whether you’re pursuing advanced certifications or aiming for a doctorate. The career possibilities are truly limitless, which is why I’ve never felt stuck or stagnant.
Currently, I’m finishing up my Master’s of Science in Nursing and am excited to continue evolving in my career as I move toward becoming a Nurse Practitioner. This next step will allow me to expand my scope of practice and make an even greater impact, and I look forward to the ongoing learning, growth, and opportunities that lie ahead.
