We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Audrey Broas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Audrey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Audsare (Odds-are) …I wish I could claim the creative genius behind this, but I can’t. My older sister Rachel one day was fed up with me not having any social media for my baking that she made me an Instagram (@audsareimbaking) and therefore my brand was born. She created it is Audsare to allow for brand growth, Audsareimbaking, or Audsareimtraveling, Audsareim….
My family and friends truly are my biggest cheerleaders. They are always there cheering me along, helping deliver wedding cakes, staying up into the late evenings with me to after my full-time job as I decorate cookies, sending me inspiration and ideas on new ideas. I would not be where I am, and my company would not be what it is without my family and friends, and I am eternally grateful for that.
Audrey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am where I am and who I am today because of my mom. I grew up stuck to her side in the kitchen doing anything and everything I could to learn what I could about baking and cooking. Once I hit high school, I had a friend that together we decided that we were going to open a bakery when we got older. Well as time went on, people change and dreams change…hers did, but mine did not.
I went to college to study hospitality and event planning, during my junior year I studied abroad in Italy and took a few pastry courses that truly solidified my love for the baking world. When I came back, I made my very first wedding cake, a 3-tiered Italian Wedding Cake with an Ermine Buttercream with some greenery as decor. Since then, I have had the privilege to make a wedding cake every couple of months with numerous additional orders in between of custom sugar cookies, cupcakes, celebratory cakes.
I currently manage and am the event coordinator at one of the top restaurants in Dallas as my full-time job and run Audsare on the side on my days off. Having the privilege to see both sides of the food and service industry has been such a blessing at the age of 25. When I first went into the industry at the age of 16 at Nothing Bundt Cakes, I never thought that I would make it to this point. Obviously when you are young you think everything and everything is possible, but as you get a little older you reach reality and see life a little bit clearer and realize that there are a few more steps to getting there than you had originally thought.
Moving into the next phase of my life I’m excited to see where life takes me and where Audsare goes and how it grows!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Truthfully, it has been by word of mouth and social media. As I have always and will always say, my friends and family are my biggest supporters. As soon as I finish one of my orders, they are the first people to share it to the world (probably even before I do). In all honestly, they should get paid for their efforts as they are truly my marketing team with all the love, they show me through their Instagram posts and all the sweet things they say about me to friends and colleagues. I would not be where I am without them.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe that I have the reputation that I do by being as transparent as possible with my clients. Having a baking company plus a full-time job that is in the food industry is a little different from a normal 9-5 job. There are days that I don’t get home from work until 11:30pm and must be back by 7am the next day and I must finish an order in between the two. I work hard, I have such a passion for both that I don’t let one stand in the way of the other and truly feel like my clients see that. Since baking isn’t my full-time job, I don’t get as much practice to try new things as others might. With that there are still things that I don’t know how to do that my clients want, but since my business is just me, I am happy to try and learn something new if it means that my clients can get the items that that were looking for. It doesn’t always work out, but they know I’m not a “professional” and I think that’s what helps my reputation and their respect for me.
