Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aubryn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Aubryn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My mom was always super supportive of my passion for music growing up. She took me to Nashville to meet with a producer and record my first demo when I was around 13 and has always been on the lookout for opportunities. When someone asked what my “backup plan was” she stood by me because I knew this is what I always wanted to do. She got me into piano and voice lessons and youth theater and really nurtured my creative talents.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I write a lot of songs inspired by mythology, literature, media and any intriguing story I can get my grubby little hands on, find the relatable message or feeling within them and turn them into songs. I tend to blend genres from folk and Americana to pop and rock, and my favorite thing to do in a song is write from the perspective of someone whose shoes we rarely get to fill.
I started live-streaming sporadically in 2010 and have had a regular weekly livestream featuring original musicians from Nashville and now the rest of the world since November 2012. In the last few years I’ve grown my audience and the pandemic really kicked me into a regular streaming schedule, usually 4 Twitch music broadcasts per week.
I have made a living as a singer/songwriter/musician/livestreamer since about 2016, performing, singing demos, and writing custom songs, etc.
I leave for a European tour in July for which I have recorded a 7 song album in French (2 original songs and 5 covers). I also identify as queer and I believe everyone has the right to be who they are without shame or judgment so long as they aren’t harming anyone.
My song Frankenstein was released on June 26 and is dedicated to anyone who has ever dared to shine and had someone try to snuff out that light.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer was instrumental in taking my music career from something I wished for to something I’ve now been doing successfully for years. It inspired me to go for it and helped me realize that asking for help isn’t always a burden. People want to help you, you just have to ask. I raised $8k for my first album in 2015, started a Patreon, and went full-time into music around that time as well. I also joined Amanda’s Facebook Fan group and Patreon, which let to many online friendships, some of whom I have since met in person and more I met in person for the first time in Europe and the UK.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Collaboration. There’s something about creating something beautiful or moving with someone else. You can make art for yourself and by yourself, but once someone else gets involved, whether in the creation of it or in witnessing it, it takes on extra meaning and begins to have a life of its own in the mind of someone else. I wrote a song from the perspective of someone under the spell of a Siren’s voice and there’s a line that goes “I thought you were drowning, I dove out to sea. I thought I could save you, but the only one drowning was me”. I played it for my Uber driver and he latched onto that line and related to it in a way that exceeded my original intentions. We then had a conversation about how we can try to help some people, but if they’re not ready or willing to receive that help, they will only take us down with them.
