We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aubrey Situmorang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aubrey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’ve started learning this music craft since I was 4 years old, taking piano lessons like most of other kids in my country. Throughout my youth, I got exposed to so many music and finally chose to play bass at around 12 years old. I’m very grateful of my process in learning music that I don’t wish to change anything about it. I believe that everything that has happened in my life impacted the way I do music now, like a mosaic forming a bigger picture. Being aware of how I got here gives me the important values of wisdom, humility, and the desire to always be a better person.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Aubrey Situmorang, a bass player residing in Los Angeles, California. I have kept myself busy by touring, recording, composing, and performing with many artists/groups. The latest tour I did was “The Life and Music of George Michael” which traveled to 20 cities all around the US & entertained up to 2000 audience each theater. I also released my debut album “One Point One” on all platforms in early 2022, and it had been nominated for Best Jazz Album in the AMI Awards (Anugerah Musik Indonesia), the biggest music awards in Indonesia. I’m known for my love of performing, having fun on stage, and serving the music to the best of my ability.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Moving to Los Angeles from Boston was not easy for me. Even though I grew up in a metropolitan city (Surabaya, Indonesia), I did not yet learn to navigate through big metropolitan cities as a working professional. When I first visited LA, I got a culture shock for how big the city was and how difficult it is to get from point A to B. But with big determination and resilience, I was able to do my big move and start a whole career in LA. I started from not having so much savings, not knowing how to drive, and being forced to take LA’s impractical public transportation. Now, after one and a half years of living in LA, I’m starting to get the hang of it and am able to fulfill my life through working in music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
All parts of my work is rewarding to me because they are also part of my purpose as a person. I am grateful that I am able to create to express myself and to impact other people who listen to my music. Seeing people enjoying my music is an assurance that I have done my best in contributing to the community, that is one of my biggest purpose in this world.
