Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aubrey Kim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Aubrey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I have been engaged in drawing since my early years, although it wasn’t until my mid-20s that I received formal education in this field. However, I never believed it was too late. Even now, I approach art with the enthusiasm of a beginner, and I believe I acquired the skill of painting at precisely the right moment. Remember, there’s no need to hesitate when pursuing your passions; you can begin at any point in time.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After immersing myself in Disney art books during high school, my desire to work in the animation industry was ignited. Over time, my interests expanded to encompass games and music as well. Through my solitary gaming hobby, I developed self-sufficiency, which eventually led to numerous job opportunities from various organizations.
While I primarily identify as a visual development artist, responsible for creating initial visual representations of animations, I engage in a range of tasks. These include 3D layout for animations, set dressing for game production, and crafting concepts for characters and backgrounds in both mediums. I take pride in my ability to adapt to diverse situations, consistently providing valuable contributions to any project. The eagerness to acquire new skills drives me to frequently explore different career paths.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I enjoy sharing my passionately created works on social media, without concerning myself too much about the outcome they may bring. It is crucial to recognize that your primary audience is yourself. Avoid drawing things that don’t resonate with your artistic vision. By staying true to your creative instincts, you will naturally attract more followers who appreciate your artwork.
While it is true that social media can sometimes have a negative impact, such as diminishing self-esteem through comparisons with others, I genuinely appreciate its ability to connect with artists worldwide and easily discover their works. I recommend allocating just five minutes a day for social media, allowing more time for enjoyable doodling and artistic exploration.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Embarking on a journey of self-discovery as an artist may sound peculiar, yet it proves to be the most rewarding experience. As I immerse myself in the act of drawing, I find solace in revisiting cherished artists, beloved places, and treasured memories. This process effortlessly unveils my likes and dislikes, guiding me towards a deeper understanding of my artistic identity. There is joy in capturing the presence of my beloved dog, enveloped by the warmth of family and the nostalgia of shared moments. With each stroke of the brush, my paintings become a testament to the profound love I hold for my family, reminding me of life’s truest values. It is equally delightful to explore the realm of commercial art, witnessing how well I can align my creativity with a company’s intellectual property. This aspect of my artistic journey, nurtured by my time at the academy, fills me with a gentle sense of pride, witnessing the growth of a resilient and passionate artist within myself.
