We recently connected with Aubrey Fletcher and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Aubrey, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I think what makes me different as an adventure elopement photographer is that I actually live in the location that I market to. There are so many “destination” elopement photographers that travel the country and the world. But I actually live in a destination location, Ouray, Colorado. Photographers from across the nation strive to shoot weddings and elopements right here in my backyard.
So what that I live here? Well, living in these mountains year-round means that I KNOW these mountains well. I’m here exploring them year-round. I am jeeping, hiking and skiing these mountains. That means I know all the epic locations, I know the local vendors personally and I support this local community wholeheartedly because I am a part of it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
In Ouray, CO, where I literally walk out my front door into the kind of landscapes that belong in epic fantasy movies, it’s not all that surprising that a girl who once pestered her mom for more Polaroid film would eventually become a professional photographer. But when I realized I could blend my passion for photography with my lifelong love of adventure, my life changed forever.
Today, I create once-in-a-lifetime photography experiences for couples who don’t mind a little mud on their shoes if it means they had the time of their lives. With a spontaneous and sincere style, I fill galleries with dynamic images that feature both awe-striking landscapes and heartwarming emotion. And I have a freaking blast doing it!
I believe everyone has a spectacular story to tell, and I would be thrilled beyond words if I could be the one to tell it! Known for my Jeep collection and passion for adventure, I love documenting unforgettable moments for couples who feel most alive with mud on their boots and sticks in their hair. I also create one-of-a-kind, luxurious wedding photography experiences for couples who prefer more traditional wedding experiences lightly sprinkled with the magic of adventure. But no matter what story you wish to tell, my goal is to celebrate everything that makes you you with every click of my camera. And I’ll quite literally go the extra mile to do it!
Because of my photojournalism training, I excel at storytelling and capturing those candid shots dreams are made of. I specialize in capturing the truth of a moment and turning it into an immersive, jaw-dropping image. Who says you have to choose between intimate moments of connection or sweeping landscape photography? I’m here to give you both! And through an experience that whimsically blends the silly and sophisticated, you’re sure to savor every second.
When I’m not exploring with couples or editing away on my latest gallery, I’m probably hiking with close friends, loading up the Jeep for a two-week camping trip with my husband and two kiddos, or just cozying in for a movie night.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Being authentic with clients is the best strategy! When talking with a potential bride or groom looking for an elopement photographer, I walk them through all the steps of eloping in the mountains. What the weather will be like, what to expect as far as trail difficulty, vendors, timelines, locations and so much more. I really like to lay it all out there for them so they know what to expect! I also believe sharing about yourself and your hobbies helps to attract potential clients (i.e. I am very laidback and love anything hiking or jeeping related)!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When I first began my photography journey professionally, I sought out other local business owners and offered to do free headshots for them. This allowed me to get to know them personally and they got to know me. Plus, who doesn’t need updated headshots every so often? It was a win-win, and I made some wonderful connections and friends!
