Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Au Revoir Heart. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Au Revoir , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I was homeschooled until around 8th grade, and my parents were really big on music. My dad played guitar and my mom is basically a ‘human jukebox’. They got me a PeeWee Les Paul for Christmas when I was 7 and that really started it all. I took some guitar, bass, piano, and drum lessons, and started playing in the youth ministry at my church and music has been stuck on me ever since. I think I could have sped up my process by applying myself more. I wasn’t too big on practicing a lot of my instruments as a teenager. I spent more time trying to write songs than trying to build my skills as an instrumentalist. I do feel my lessons with multiple different instruments was huge in building my composing skills. I just wish I practiced a little harder. The biggest obstacle was just being a teenager playing music and caring what people think. It was really difficult for me to get out of my comfort zone and be proud of my art without worrying about rejection. I think that really set me back a few years.
Au Revoir , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Dane Skeeter. I go by ‘Au Revoir Heart’. I write an eclectic mix of music primarily focused on a conceptual fantasy story I’ve written. My music scores the journey of virus named ‘Cheeky’, who travels through different parts of the brain, searching for his purpose within his reality. I write and record as a solo artist from Rancho Cucamonga, California. I also play live around Southern California with a group of wonderful musicians from the area. I think what has really set me apart as a musician is my consistency on releases and my world building behind my music. I like to think that it brings more texture to the art. Not only do the listeners get to hear, but they can also dig in and find a whole world being created behind the music and I’m very proud to be doing so.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on social media is a pretty frustrating and disheartening experience. People can be overly judgmental on the internet as most know. I try to focus just on being genuine and connecting with as many people as I can. I replied to every comment, every message, every single interaction with anyone who backed my music I made it a point to connect with them in some way. I think doing this over the years helped me gain fans that weren’t just interested in my music, but also interested in being apart of my growth. Being transparent in my life and genuine tends to attract other genuine people. My best advice would be to not take it so seriously, and stay consistent. Post some funny stuff, post some sad stuff, show people that you’re relatable and interesting in more aspects than just your craft.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a musician is knowing that you have a gift that can heal people in such a cool way. I know it sounds corny but there is no better feeling than when someone tells you they relate to a song you wrote or how it helped them get through their day. It also gives me a sense of purpose knowing that I’m a conduit for the universe to push ideas through. It’s my job as an artists to pull those ideas from the universe and personify them for myself and for others.
