Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Atziri and Yajahira Peña. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Atziri and Yajahira, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
We came up with the idea for our business because we always felt like we didn’t fit in. We saw the need that our undocumented communty had towards a business that spoke about what our experience in all while empowering us. It’s been an amazing opportunity to connect with our Latines and create such a wonderful community of loving and resilient people.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are Adelitas Apparel, an Undocumented and Latinx owned brand. We create products that represent our culture and empowers our immigrant community. We have a huge variety range of products from stickers, bags, shirts, sweaters, and so much more!
What makes us proud baout what we do is that we create products that talk about important social justice issues that impact our Latinc communty. We are a brand that invests back into our community and not just says that they do. We have community initiatives such as our DACA fund where we raise funds to help others pay for their DACA Renewal fees.
We really care about our community, so we make it a point to practice community care to uplift our community. We see ourselves as more than just a brand, we see ourselves as a community and a movement.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
We have been able to start a business thanks to our parents. One day my sister and I told my parents about how we wanted to start our own businesses and my dad went into his room and brought out a $50 bill. It has been this investment that has gotten us to where we are today.
My mom has been the person who takes me to get the products that we need to create, we see her as ur business plug. We met our screenprinters through my mom askign around and taking us to all of the recommendations she received.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Whta has helped us build our reputation is our videos. We share a lot about hwo we are and what we do. We’ve been one of the brands that has always been really transparent about what it is that we stand for and it helps people want to invest in our work.
We are also reachable. While we continue to grow, we like letting people know that we do our best to reply to everyone and to help them our achieve their goals. We offer our community the same love and support they give us and it builds a better relationship.
