We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Atticus Stockdale. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Atticus below.
Atticus, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
For the last year my band, Those Dogs, has been working on our first full length album. It has been an intense, busy, stressful, but ultimately very creatively fulfilling experience. To finally have it out for people to hear is a huge relief and we are really proud of what we were able to create. We recorded the album back in August of 2022 in Daddysville, NC in Christian’s Parent’s shed (Christian being our drummer). We all got 4 days off of work in order to put every waking moment into getting the album recorded. We would only take breaks in order to eat pimento cheese sandwiches Christian’s mom made us.
After we finished tracking our next hurdle was getting the album mixed and mastered. After struggling to self produce tracks we decided on attempting to hire somebody to help us. After a lot of searching we found Reade Wolcott of We Are The Union and she was more than willing to help us.
Reade made the album sound incredible and beyond the reaches of anything we could have done ourselves.
Now we are pleased to say our debut record, Nobody Laughed (and Everyone Hated Us) is available to stream anywhere you can stream music and we are hitting the road in support of the record Sep 4-10th.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Those Dogs are a punk band from Western, NC. We have been together since 2017 and have been making music and playing shows ever since. The band formed while we were in highschool after watching a Bomb The Music Industry documentary together. Our style takes influence from a wide range of punk, ska, indie rock, and hardcore music. We strive to make fun hard hitting music that helps build connections and community. Accessibility is very important to us which is why we have all of our music available for free on our bandcamp as well as streaming services. Now with our debut album, Nobody Laughed and Everyone Hated Us), out we have plans to keep our momentum by touring, building connections, and recording more music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Connecting with people who have enjoyed out music either online or in person at shows. We have made some incredible friends this way.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
For DIY musicians wanting to get into the industry I would recommend: Never Get Tired (a documentary about iconic DIY punk band Bomb The Music Industry), In Defense of Ska by Aaron Carnes (a book showcasing the history and significance of Ska music through its many waves), Produce Your Own Damn Movie by Llyod Kaufman
