We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Attallah King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Attallah , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?

I believe that it takes determination, consistency, and self-awareness to become successful. Determination because if one is determined to accomplish the desires of their heart no matter how the journey may look success will surely find you. Consistency is EVERYTHING! Some may not believe so, but if you remain consistent your target audience will begin to trust you as a business and a person. Self-awareness I feel is another major characteristic because knowing who you are as an individual, what your goals are, and what you would like to accomplish will stop you from being persuaded from friends and family members to do something they may believe is good for you. When you know who you are, what you want to become and create; the load feels lighter because you’re operating within your own being. Then you’ll experience, what would feel like work no longer feels like work because you’re doing what you love and not what someone else would like for you to do.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

My name is Attallah King, I am the CEO & Founder of Unique Treats, LLC. Unique Treats is an order-based gourmet bakery here in the Orlando area that specializes in gourmet cupcakes while offering a plethora of sweet treat options. We recently launched our new Specialty Cupcake Collection consisting of unique cake flavors stacked with different desserts. At Unique Treats we take pride in adding sweetness to our cupcake lover’s events, birthday celebrations, weddings, and business meetings. As a child I’ve always wanted to own a bakery but never actually be the baker. I wanted to only be the owner while practicing as a Dentist. I know seems crazy right? Well, my father was a chef and known for his delicious cakes so for me this was a great career plan. After the passing of both of my parents I decided to follow my dreams and stop allowing my current situation to defeat me. I officially started my baking business Unique Treats, LLC in November of 2015. Within a month of me baking for friends and family, my business grew tremendously I began to have customers from many nearby cities and states. I opened a Cupcake Kiosk in 2019 which also allowed customers from different countries taste our cupcakes as well.

Throughout this process of launching Unique Treats, I’ve had many setbacks both good and bad. This has not been an easy journey at all for me, but I continue to trust God and focus on the desires of my heart. Knowing what I want for my brand is something I take pride in; it doesn’t matter what my current situation is I continue to keep going and I would advice the same to anyone who may have hard times in life as well as being a business owner.

Something interesting that most people do not know about me is that I love oral health. I know when you have healthy smile you begin to take pride in smiling more and we need more beautiful smiles in the world. My goal is to soon become a Dentist, I’m currently completing my last semester at The University of Central Florida and will be furthering my education after.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

A time I had to show resilience, would be after the loss of my father. During this time, I was attending school and trying to figure out how was I going to take care of myself financially while still accomplishing my goals. Immediately after my father’s death I started working two jobs, withdrew from classes at The University of Central Florida. I began to do what I needed to take care of myself which later forced me to follow my dreams and birth my business Unique Treats. I went from withdrawing from school, working two jobs to baking fulltime and enrolling back in school. This was one of the hardest times of my life but my resilience to keep going is what has placed me in the position I am on today.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

NO means No is a lesson I learned as a child from my parents. However, I had to unlearn the meaning of this statement as I began to elevate as a business owner. Yes, I do understand NO does mean No when it comes to expressing your wants or responding to something you may not truly want. When it comes to a business aspect NO actually is not a negative response. As I began to scale my business, I would constantly receive NO responses or not approved. Often when this would happen, I would begin to feel down and sometimes take a step back thinking maybe I shouldn’t do what I really set out to do for my business. One morning after meditating, I realized that every NO I received in the past couple of months is not a “NO Attallah you cannot do this” each NO I received was a no Attallah not now, but very soon! Very soon you will begin to see the desires of your heart show up. I began to reprogram my way of thinking and tell myself “No does not mean NO it just means not right now but I will have everything I want I just have to believe and do the work”.
