Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Attack Peter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Attack thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I was a teacher for 13 years before becoming a full time artist. I taught everything from kindergarten to university grad students. All those years allowed me to see the formula for success repeated over and over in kids from all walks of life. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and specific goals beats “natural talent” every day. The kid who wanted it more always surpassed the kid who was “born with it”.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Peter Santa-Maria (@ATTACKPETER) is an in-house artist at Skybound Entertainment known for his hand-carved linoleum block prints and designer toys featuring pop culture icons as well as his own original monster universe. His notably bold style is influenced by American traditional tattoo flash, historical artwork from Thailand and Japan, and artists such as Jack Kirby.
Many of Peter’s prints feature his creation, the tentacled kaiju Takoro, and he has collaborated with brands such as Marvel, Toho, Nongshim Shin Noodle Soup and most recently, Mighty Jaxx for his latest designer toy Daruma. A printmaking expert with singular style, Peter has gained a dedicated fan following through his original designs, memorable collaborations and work with Skybound across comics, games and much more.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal with “Attack Peter” is to become undeniable. I challenge myself every day to make the best work I can. I want to stand alone stylistically and develop characters and worlds with my block prints that can live on in other media as well. I’m creating a sandbox that I and other creators will hopefully be able to play in for a long time. Then, when I’m dead, others can continue to benefit from it. I study Walt Disney, George Lucas, Stan Lee, Todd McFarlane and others like them because I want to build something that lives beyond me,
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my life as an artist is getting to meet the other artists and creatives who have inspired me for decades. Being able to earn the respect of those whose work I’ve admired my whole life is a very gratifying feeling. I feel a responsibility to carry the torch and hopefully inspire the next generation of artists to get to work and be successful!
