We were lucky to catch up with Asor Pena-terron recently and have shared our conversation below.
Asor, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
One summer about 3 years ago, my full time job as a Program Manager began to slow down to the point where I was only working about 12 hours a week. Financially, that was a difficult year. Then one random Wednesday, I decided to comfort myself with some ChocoFlan. I shared them on my social media and my messages were flooded with request to sell them! That’s when I decided to invest $50 in baking supplies and started selling them from my little apartment. As the days went by the orders continued to come in and those $50 were the best idea I could have ever done.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My love for baking started when I was just 15 years old. I visited my grandma in Mexico where I saw her make chocoflan in a blender! After giving me the step by step on her recipe, I fell in love with the process. I began selling baked goods in high school to help pay for my yearbook, prom dress, and gradnight. I would get requests for different flavored cupcakes and I enjoyed every bit of it. Fast forward to 12 years later, I posted my mini chocoflans on my social media and my followers loved the idea so much they began placing orders. That’s when I turned my love and passion for baking into my small business. There has never been a day that I regret this decision. I continue to look for ways to grow my business. My dream is to open a storefront and hire employees. After all, what started as an idea has now brought me to where I am now. My baking is not just a cake or a pastry- it’s someone’s wedding, someone’s celebration, or someone’s success!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media a few ways. It started on my personal account with a little over 1,000 followers. I then created a business social media account and shared it with my friends. The following was slow but consistent! As more people started ordering, I handed out cards with my social media QR code. When I expanded from just ChocoFlan to custom cakes, that’s when my audience shifted! It went from people wanting a snack, to people want catered dessert table.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients along word of mouth, is keeping up with the latest social media trends. Creating videos, photographing my art, and sharing my story!
