We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Asiah Spencer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Asiah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned my craft as I do anything else, doing it repetitively.I think the fundamentals of taking a quality photo is most important, however everyones opinion of a quality photo is different. Something that would have sped up the process is realizing that art is what you make it, it does not have to be perfect in the eyes of others just yours. Giving myself the validation of my talent before anyone is essential to my craft, to keep its originality and uniqueness.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into photography early on, around my sophomore year of high school. I would go out downtown with my step-dad, who was a professional photograher to bond as it seemed that was the only thing we could do together without butting heads. It was something I was good at, but did not want to be, because thats what he did. But I’ll admit I had the eye from the beginning, and had fun with it when doing it on my own. Eventually, other things found my interest more like working towards a soccer scholarship, which I accomplished not long after. That slowed down when covid hit, I realized school was not fun nor beneficial if I could not play soccer and school was not for me. Soon after making the decision to stop going to school I decided to pick back up a camera and the rest is what the world see’s today. My Brand is still growing, its only the beginning and I’m never stopping, the possibilities of what I am capable of is endless so just stay tuned.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think something non creatives struggle to understand about us is that the difference is that you see a dream/ vision and go about your day. Us creatives see a vision and get a fire lit beneath us to go and make it a reality. Everything that was ever created started with a vision or an idea, creatives just have the courage to make it happen. Our heads are not in the clouds, we just see a vision on replay that seems way to real to be ignored.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There is a mission that I’m on, which I never like to go too into detail with people about, but its something I think about as soon as I wake up and right before bed, its a good type of haunting that drives me to keep going forward everyday. I know that as long as I am breathing Im working to get closer to what I see in high hopes that one day my reality will feel like a dream.
