We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Asia Denson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Asia below.
Asia, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with something countless entrepreneurs have had to figure out on the fly – how have you dealt with the rise of remote work?
Yes, our team can work remotely but partially. We’ve made it work by using cloud-based project management tools, clear communication protocols, and regular check-ins via social media such as facebook or instagram messenger, zoom, whats app or even face time. Some pitfalls include occasional miscommunication and slower response times. Non-obvious benefits include fewer distractions, better work-life balance, and access to a wider talent pool beyond Detroit
Asia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
A graduate of Jackson State University, she graduated with honors in 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Engineering Technology. While attending, she was a member of the famous Sonic Boom of the South Marching Band, National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT), Epsilon Pi Tau Honor Technology Society of Professionals, Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), and Who’s Who Among American College Students Scholar.
Ms. Denson is also a graduate of Eastern Michigan University and she obtained her Masters of Science in Construction Management in 2012. Ms. Denson has constantly learned from her life experiences and developed skills in both learning and life management.
She is a very motivated person with goal setting; time management and prioritizing skills that has helped her to achieve whatever she set her mind to do. Her goal is to establish a successful and profitable /general contracting firm that will focus on home renovations, road construction, apprenticeship program, and consulting.
The apprenticeship program would train at-risk youth, ex-offenders, and adults who want a career change to become electricians, heating and cooling technicians, carpenters, etc.
Ms. Denson plans to assist the apprenticeship graduates in finding employment. She would also like to provide stipends for students to pay for gas, food, books, etc. This in turn will be a great opportunity to bring transformation to the at-risk youth, ex-offenders and adults looking for the chance to change their lives. Ms. Denson’s young age is not a factor when it comes to taking care of business. She is very eager and determined to become successful in life and in expanding her business to a higher level, as she is a firm believer in working with a “Spirit of Excellence.” For this reason, Ms. Denson is very active in her community.
She volunteers as a big sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Michigan and with Habitat for Humanity. She is a member of the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program Alumni, National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT), Epsilon Pi Tau Honor Technology Society of Professionals, Society of Manufacturing and Student Engineers (SME), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), Detroit Young Professionals (DYP) and National Association of Professional Women.
It brings her great pleasure knowing that being a mentor can really help shape a young girl’s future. Her volunteer services and care allows her to be a positive influence to the youth she mentors.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I funded my business by leveraging personal credit cards for startup costs like tools, marketing, and materials. At the same time, I wholesaled houses—finding undervalued properties, securing them under contract, and assigning the contracts to investors for a fee. The profits from wholesaling helped pay down debt and reinvest into the business, allowing me to grow without traditional loans. My huge social media presence and showing how much I love Detroit helped a great deal with building my name/brand as well.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Losing my condo to foreclosure and ultimately selling it via short sale in 2014 felt devastating at the time—but it turned out to be the best thing that happened to me personally and professionally. That moment forced me to rebuild from scratch, and in doing so, I discovered my grit. It pushed me to learn everything I could about real estate, credit, and financial strategy. I turned that pain into purpose, using the experience to fuel my business and help others avoid the same mistakes. It became the foundation of my resilience and the launchpad for Denson Construction Services. i told myself that if I am ever this broke again it will be because I messed up and maxed out every single credit card and option for my business to make it. I can live with that.
