We recently connected with Asia Denise Griffin Crockett and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Asia Denise , thanks for joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I actually manage my social media accounts , so it can be a little stressful having to be the artist , and the dealer . I receive a lot of commission requests on my instagram account , some I don’t read or reply to until a week later , I’m trying to get better at this and having a set schedule for commissions . Commissions for artist’s are considered our bread and butter , it’s the most efficient way to show off your creative ability and also forming those close business relationships , and most of these clients will be from social media .
Asia Denise , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a visual artist , advertising graphic designer , and I do commission logos as well as web designs . The first time I ever started drawing my mom gifted me a computer desk I was in middle school , and i Drew everywhere on it , with permanent marker , pencil , and nail polish. After my mom saw what I did to the desk she was upset , and bought me journals and paper and told me to draw on that instead . My love for art did not start until I was about 21, I was just out of college and teaching chemistry, it’s me being a visual Learner , loving to draw and paint , I incorporated that into my lessons . Eventually moving on to figure drawing and portraits , I felt more comfortable here , doing sketches I never thought they were perfect , but with painting if I don’t like something I can paint over it . I recently had a show titled ENIGMA , and I also had a poem I wrote as my artist statement , because as I’m moving to do more merch and prints , I want my audience to understand me or at least leaving my show with at least a little more information about me that they didn’t know before . As a artist I try my best to paint things that i feel , with me being so emotional , I use that as a way to create and to connect with my audience . As of lately I’m doing more investing in merch , hoodies , mugs , T- shirts , etc . Having merch available on my website will give me the most use out of my Paintings , if I’m producing art on a consistent basis and making merch , my art will be seen by the masses . I encourage all artist to start making merch I think in the next 5-10 years a lot of artist are going to want to monetize more on Their collections , it’s definitely the future and it’s currently helping a lot artist nationwide .
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Social media is the best tool out right now for artist , and if you use it correctly there is nothing that you can’t achieve . All of commissions come from social media , it’s also a great way to connect with other small business owners that need some commission work done .
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I only have a art page on my instagram for commissions and I contact my customers that purchase from my website through email . Posting live videos of me painting are also a way for me to keep in touch with my clients and to let them know I’m working on new things .
