We recently connected with Asia Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Asia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I started my business in 2017 . When I first started out , I was in college doing hair for extra cash . When I left college I even veered off into potential becoming a nail technician. I purchased all of the supplies , a table , anything to really help me hit the floor running but it just wasn’t my niche . It made me happy to create but it didn’t feel like it was my destiny . I felt terrible dropping something I invested so much money and time into but I chose to stop fighting my talents and what really made me passionate which was hair. If I could go back in time , I do feel like I should’ve been more patient with myself and continue to build on something I knew that I was great at . Starting sooner would’ve given me the possibility of having more clientele, of mastering my craft Alot sooner then 2022 . If I could change one thing about my experience it would be not dropping the ball because things got a little tough or I wasn’t exceeding as quick as I would’ve hoped . When I started doing my friends & siblings hair it had to be 2014 , and I would literally tell them not to tell anyone I did hair because at the time I thought I wanted to be a lawyer. If I had to give anyone advice on feeling pulled in so many different directions , it would definitely be “Do what makes your heart happy. Hard work isn’t what makes perfection, Consistency is”
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I first started out in the hair industry, I was merely working off trial and error . I refused to Watch youtube cause I just couldn’t sit through any of the videos , and my family wasn’t the richest so I couldn’t pay to get my hair done every other week but I definitely made sure It was done . My mom had always been the type to switch her hair constantly whether its the color , silky straight , or a big juicy afro . I would help her do her hair sometimes. My proudest accomplishment would be getting into one of the top cosmetology schools in atlanta Aveda Institute they specialize more-so in Natural Hair & Master Colorists. Perfection is something Ive always strived for when it comes to hand making wigs or even just executing the style my client’s request. What separates me from everyone else would be how effortlessly natural & blended it looks. The environment in which I do hair is relaxing , comforting , and your not just talking to your stylist but your friend to . The pictures I take are raw, unfiltered , no edits every time because I work with my hands and I simply think its a work of art and I definitely don’t wanna put in so much work just for it to be filtered up. Ill also be including shampoo and conditioning in every service in 2023 . I want my clients to feel that I am trust worthy , that they wont get that cancellation text hours before their appointment , that communication, respect, and reliability will always be cherished within the Dior’s Beauty Co Brand .
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Custom wig options do require me to manufacture my wigs , however I did find a vendor that had already machine made wigs which help out alot With the Factory Made Wig option density is very specific which is the thickness of the wig itself and it only really has about 3 options which are: 150 , 180, and 200. Anything additional would have to be custom made which is why I still offer the handmade option , but I love adding my labels and putting my special touch on each wig whether factory made or hand . A major lesson I learned when it came to manufacturing wigs, is that everyones head measurements aren’t the same and its important to inquire about those to get a perfect fit.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A major lesson that I had to unlearn has to be you have ample time to try all the things you wanna do . It encouraged me to quit more often then staying disciplined and committed. Ive replaced that lesson with Growth requires discipline and consistency. Thats the only way you’ll see a shift. I also had to learn to stop fighting my purpose . They say if you wanna make god laugh tell him your plans. I think I was so consumed with what I wanted my purpose to be that I skipped right over my destiny. God showed me the way not once but twice , he gave me the clientele , he gave me the gifted hands and I fought him tooth and nail and possibly missed out on opportunities because of the life I thought I wanted to live and not the life thats already planned for me .
