We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Asia “Ashton” Morgan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Asia “Ashton”, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Every day I wake up, I’m taking a risk with this DJ life. DJs don’t just play music, we put ourselves on display, vulnerable to every eye and ear, whether we’re on some of the world’s largest stages or the smallest, most intimate ones. This life can take a lot out of you, the late nights, sometimes the early mornings, and the constant pressure to please everyone, even when you know you can’t. It takes guts to be seen, to be judged, and still give it everything, all while making sure you’re not just doing the same thing over and over again. But we do it, because we love it. I do it because I love the music. I love the people. I love the lights. I love the way it feels when I’m the conductor of a Saturday night vibe. This career isn’t for everyone. Some months, you only have two gigs. Other months, you have too many to count. The risk you take as a professional DJ is tremendous, you’re constantly betting on yourself. And honestly, sometimes that’s scary.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started DJing 10 years ago at Deckademics, where I was taught by some of the best DJs in the city. Because of my time at Deckademics, I was lucky enough to meet DJ Gabby Love, who took me under her wing as her protégé. From there, I grew my skills under her and the late DJ Indiana Jones, two legends who helped shape not just my sound, but my path. When people meet me, I want them to feel like they’re meeting a new friend. I love people, and I love what I do, and I want that to shine through in every set and every event. I’m truly proud of everything I’ve done, because every experience has helped shape me into the DJ, promoter, and person I am today.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Supporting your local creatives doesn’t always mean spending money. Don’t get me wrong, money is useful, but sometimes the biggest impact comes from simply showing up. Taking the time to be present, to listen, to vibe, and just be there means everything. Your presence alone can help fuel the passion and keep the creative culture alive.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
What drives me is making myself proud, making my family and friends proud, and keeping the memory of the late DJ Indiana Jones alive. His legacy inspires me every day to create and keep pushing forward. I’m passionate about giving people safe, welcoming spaces where they can show up as their full selves, no judgment, just good energy. I truly believe Indiana is full of incredible talent, and I love being able to showcase that in spaces that are open, inclusive, and built for community.
