We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ashtyn Sibinski. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ashtyn below.
Alright, Ashtyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Since a young age, and I mean young as in since I could hold a crayon or paintbrush, I’ve always found myself drawn to creative practices. Throughout grade school and high school, I took my art classes seriously and always honored the projects I was asked to complete. When I got to college, I decided it was time to learn everything I could from the art and design faculty and turn a creative hobby into a career. The path was never linear, but I knew deep down in my early twenties that I was committed to figuring out my career as an artist.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Ashtyn Sibinski and I’m an abstract painter, collage artist and muralist living and working in Minneapolis, MN. I create original paintings, hand-painted collage artwork and I design and install custom murals for clients. In addition to this, I create home-good items with my designs such as candles and notebooks.
I was drawn to a variety of creative practices from a very young age. I recall receiving different art supplies for most gift-giving holidays and birthdays growing up, from sketchbooks and pens to to the art kits that contained a little bit of everything – I know you know the one I’m referencing! When I got to college, I pursued a degree in Studio Art with a focus in painting and printmaking. A Studio Art degree means I had the opportunity to study a variety of creative practices such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and bookmaking, Learning these different crafts was exciting and inspiring. Throughout college career I gravitated towards painting and printmaking. I adored the slowness of these practices as well as the way color was used in layers and brushstrokes. Using paint in painting and the ink in printmaking were easily my most favored materials because of how the colors appeared. Color has always been one of my biggest fascinations, and I enjoy studying color theory.
In my work today, you’ll quickly notice my use of color and a variety of color combinations. I strive to create interesting conversations within the shapes and colors you see, as well as consider how the viewer will feel and respond to different colors and compositions. My work includes shapes and colors that are unexpected and intriguing. The minimalist compositions invite viewers to pause, rest, take a breath. I want my work to uplift and ease the audience. My use of color, shape and the occasional pattern sets my work apart from others as its always an unexpected sequence; colors you wouldn’t have thought to place together and shapes you wouldn’t have thought to overlap.
I’m very proud of my work and the time I take to craft each and every piece with thoughtfulness and intention. I want clients and pals to know just how much thought and consideration goes into work that presents as simple and minimalist. Funny enough, it can be challenging at times to make something look “easy.” The nuance of color and the placement of a shape can alter an entire composition and present an entirely different look and feel with the smallest of changes. I take my craft very seriously, and it brings me joy to add these works to the world.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of this journey is connecting with people; I love connecting with clients, buyers and art lovers as well as other creatives, artists and small business owners. Working as a solo artist can be isolating at times, so the opportunity to connect with the world around us, learning from one another and lifting each other up is simply my favorite part. I’ve grown in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise by connecting with so many beautiful people in my career as an artist.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I know social media can be intimidating, tricky, frustrating, inspiring and every feeling in between. I’ve personally built my audience on social media by doing one thing consistently: I continue to show up. Over time, this looks different. I may learn how to use new features on social media, Perhaps I get creative with the photos I post and experiment with how I write my captions. Whether it’s Instagram stories, making posts on a variety of platforms, engaging with my audience and those I admire – I’m showing up. I don’t wait for my “content” to be perfect and polished, I simply show up in more ways than one and continue to be authentically me. When I’m commenting on posts of brands that I love, it’s authentic. When I’m saying thank you and express my gratitude to someone who tells me they enjoy my work, it’s real. Forget the algorithm, be yourself and show up.
